Went on a Sunday. They are no longer doing half priced sushi. The 1/2 priced sushi is what made this a 5/5 star establishment.
We had the egg rolls, crab rangoon, Bangkok shrimp, and potstickers for appetizers. We were expecting more from a quality perspective given the price point of each item. The shrimp was good if not consistent with other times we have been to 45, would order again for sure; the egg rolls were better than I expected with a sweet and tangy flare, the crab rangoon was really really small and there were only 4 so for this price we were severely disappointed. We generally felt the same for the potstickers as well. At half the price, I wouldn't have an issue.
The sushi: We had CA rolls, Philly roll, Playboy Roll and Sophia Roll. The traditional rolls (CA and Philly) were very small and over priced. The Playboy was delicious as always and very very consistent. They really do have this one dialed in. The Sophia roll was not as good as we hoped, pretty sure its because of the balance of the rice paper with the other ingredients. Reading the description of the roll, we just had higher expectations.
Environment/Service: Service was impeccable! Waiter was attentive, funny and overall charming. We never felt rushed, he answered all of our questions and food was delivered promptly. He did a great job. The atmosphere on a mid day Sunday was lighter than what we would usually see (see elimination of 1/2 priced sushi) about 3/4 full. There was immediate seating, no wait. Parking is rough but its downtown/Mass Ave so to be expected honestly.
Overall: appetizers aside, this used to be our go-to Sunday place where we could try a variety of sushi rolls and if they were hit or miss it was hard to be disappointed because they were half priced. The quality of the sushi overall was barely average and I'm grading on a curve since we are not on the coast. We have gone on days when it's not half priced and when sticking to the main entrees or specialty rolls, you may have better luck.
As an aside, I understand the business of running a quality restaurant is very hard and costs (material and staff) are rising rapidly. I sympathize. But $125 (I always include tip in my overall cost of service because servers matter!) for 4 people (2 adults, 2 kids, no liquor) and we were still hungry afterwards and generally disappointed is never a good sign.
To be honest, it's going to be tough to return anytime soon. At this price point, there are just so many other food options and I would feel better trying another local/downtown sushi option first. They used to be top of the list. Not saying never but, it will be a while.
I would recommend if you have never been for the service and ambiance. Just dont get too excited if you only eat basic sushi, you are going to have to try a specialty roll to be...
Read morefood was ok. But my service was horrible. Waiter didn't have much knowledge of the food or wine. Didn't pay attention to what was being requested. I had to ask 4 times, for an item. Before I recieve it. During the midst of dinner. I asked about a wine. And ended up ordering a bottle. He bought the bottle out. Didn't show the bottle to me. Just started pouring in to my glass. Did not wait for me to approve or to taste. Bottle had different recommendations on how to serve it. Which he followed none of it. Which happen to be an horrible bottle of wine. When I did see him . I inform him that it just wasn't good. But he had no concerns. Power went out. I asked the server would there be an issue with credit. He said not to worry. I informed the server I had an event to go to. After he drop off food. He never returned to refill drinks or to make sure we had everything we needed for our meals or even to bring the check even though he knew I was on a time restraint. . I personally watch him engage with another table (which came in afterwards of us. He was very attentive, refilled there drinks, Check back, and was more engage with them. When he finally did come back out. After my table was sitting with coats on. He went to OTHER table to get ask about there checks. And then walk away (our table was side by side) He was not considerate to even check back up on us. As we were just sitting in the dark. I don't want to play the race card. But me being a black woman. I could clearly see the difference in service. My table and I left money on the table because we could no longer wait. With a lot of items that was untouched. Before walking out. I went to the door and ask was there a manager up there. Other employees was like no. I informed them that I had to go. And that there was money on the table. They were like hold up so they can get my server. But we were already leaving behind.
I know it's a lot of things going on in the world. But as an server. You work for tips. You should treat your guest equally. And should never judge a book by it cover.
Me coming from the service industry...... so where the guests at my table. Might have been his best tip of the night. ...
Read moreIf I could give this restaurant a NEGATIVE 5 I would! I came to this restaurant for the first time today, and brought my girlfriend & best friend as well as two children. After a 30 minute wait to be seated we placed our APPETIZER order and didn’t receive if for almost 2 hours. Once we finally got our food, it was only mediocre, but that isn’t what took the cake. I was fine with having mediocre service; however, after speaking with the manager NATHAN (he claimed to be the restaurant owner) who left a horrible taste in my mouth about the entire experience, I will NEVER RETURN TO THIS RESTAURANT. I attempted to share my concerns with the manager about our less than stellar experience and before I could even get a word out he rudely interrupted me. I informed him that our first time experience was underwhelming, and these were his exact words... “Maybe this isn’t the restaurant for you. We get plenty of service so we obviously must be doing pretty good, & if you don’t like the service here then you shouldn’t come back.” THAT WAS THE MOST DISRESPECTED I HAVE EVER BEEN AT ANY ESTABLISHMENT. After arguing with the “manager” for several minutes (something no paying customer should have to do) We decided that 45 Degrees was undeserving of our hard earned money & walked out on our bill (money was no issue, this was simply a matter of PRINCIPLE alone). After leaving, the manager FOLLOWED US and proceeded to call the police on us and said that he was going to get me arrested for THEFT. There was STILL NO APOLOGY, NO RECONCILIATION, only DISCRIMINATION & ANTAGONISTIC NARCISSISTIC BEHAVIOR. IF YOU ARE BLACK & DON’T WANT TO BE PRE-JUDGED SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! I am not one to pull the race card; however, when I am degraded & disrespected by THE OWNER (the worst part about it all) & still expected to pay a bill for the mistreatment I am infuriated. ESPECIALLY WHEN ALL OF THIS IS DONE IN FRONT OF MY GODSON AND MY NIECE! He assumed that because we were young and black with kids that we were trying to get a free meal, and then treated us EXACTLY HOW HE FELT ABOUT US! I NEVER LEAVE REVIEWS, but this experience was definitely worthy of...
