We’ve been coming to Greek Islands for well over a decade now, and I’m sad to say my recent experiences have not been nearly as good as what we remember from years past. There are still highlights that keep us coming back. The saganaki (flaming cheese) is a delicious and fun appetizer experience! I always order it along with one of their wonderful old world wines when I’m bringing friends for their first time. For dessert, the baklava is so rich and decadent with the perfect crisp and flakey top. However, our main courses have been pretty forgettable lately. Dishes like their gyros, souvlaki and tzadziki really used to stand out with the flavors of fresh, fragrant herbs. But it seems like they’ve cut back those ingredients and the dishes just aren’t as good. Most recently I had the chicken gyro, the meat was pretty dry and it was accompanied by only a couple small pita triangles. I’ve also missed the side of Mama Fofo’s delicious potatoes in my last few meals. The bland pilaf is just no substitute. The last few service experiences were also not great. Though friendly, our servers have also been inattentive. I’ve stopped going for workday lunches because of the delays. And we’ve also missed seeing the belly dancer during the weekend dinner service. I’m hopeful they can make some adjustments and get back to the amazing dining experiences we once had here.

In 2011, we were passing through Indianapolis during a trip back from South Dakota and we stopped into a very nice Greek restaurant. For the passed 3 years, we have been going to Indianapolis for my daughter to attend GenCon and I always wanted to go back to that Greek Restaurant. Unfortunately, that restaurant isn't there any more so I went to look for another Greek Restaurant on our last trip this year and I found this great place, Greek Islands. We went to Greek Island because it looked so nice from the outside and it's very close to the convention center. It was really great. The inside ambience doesn't match the cuteness of the outside but the food and service made up for any shortcomings in that area. Our waiter was great. I think his name was Jimmy but I am not sure. He had a limp and he was super attentive and very friendly. He is a real bonus for the restaurant. He said he was the owner’s Κουμπάρος (Best Man) I believe. Once he found out my wife was Greek, he spoke Greek exclusively and made us feel like family. I had the Pastitsio and a baklava and they were both amazing. My wife had the Greek salad and my daughter had the Gyro. The food was excellent. I will definitely go back here next time I am in Indianapolis.

For lunch I tried out the Gyro . What is so cool is the soup! I am from Northwest Indiana, and this soup is very known up there. Like a delicacy. It is known as lemon rice lol. Us region rats love it. Anyways, the gyro and the soup were fantastic. So glad I tried this place, and I know where it is at now. It hit the spot! Will be back, next time I want to sit down inside or out on the patio in front. I mean, I was thinking about this Gyro 10 hours after I ate it , then I came here and decided to write this review. Worth noting, my two coworkers loved the chicken gyros they ordered, I just like them original . The cucumber sauce that I can’t spell for the life of me was fantastic with the handful of diced onions and tomatoes. The potato was almost magical. Not even going to elaborate on that, you just need to see what I’m talking about. My lunch slapped today.

My partner and I were just in here. I remembered it fondly from years before, as of now I believe I remembered it wrong. That just feels disappointing. It was incredibly hot, I’m attributing that to the fact that we sat next to windows. Although today wasn’t a hot day at all, maybe the heat from the outside and a small dining space made it feel that way?? Looking around the room, my partner and I both realized I was the only POC there. I’m not saying that’s 100% the reason for the coldness from the 1st server and us being so rushed; however, my partner and I did make note of it and he expressed his feelings to me. I can’t say that I fully disagree. I think rushing your customers and being stand-offish can lead people to maybe (hopefully) just misinterpret some things and leave a “bad taste” so to speak. I’d like to think it wasn’t that way, but hey who knows nowadays? Not even half done with our entree and the 1st server gives the check telling us no rush. As we look and see her with others she’s definitely not rushing them and continues checking to see if we’re done. The 2nd server at some point grabbed the check and re-did it to account for the baklava we had to add on because the 1st server checked us out way too soon. The food wasn’t bad and that I can say I appreciated. The overall experience was just made uncomfortable because of the coldness, the rushing us, and how...
