We visited Islamorada for the first time in 2018. We "hit" as many places as we could during our stay and noted the Shrimp Shack for the next visit.
We visited on Sunday, May 5 and Kimberly was our server. She was very friendly, helpful and attentive. My husband tried the shrimp fritters and though they were good, he wouldn't order them again...too much fried food for his taste.
We bough had the fish basket; his blackened and mine coconut fried. His was more blackened than he liked but the fish was very good. Mine was delicious. I asked for a side of their pina colada sauce and my fish then tasted like the main course and dessert rolled into one!
I love iced tea and this is the first place I've ever been to that brought my iced tea in a quart Mason jar! Yes, a QUART of iced tea! And it was very good, though I did not need a refill ;)
The restaurant is small, air conditioned and conveniently located near where we stayed.
Then, on our last day there, we planned to visit for just a piece of Key Lime Pie (had not eaten any the entire stay). As our day progressed, we ultimately decided to have dinner AND pie on our way out of town! This time our server was Thomas. He was also friendly, helpful and attentive.
I ordered the fish basket again, this time grilled. Other places we dined during our stay "grill" the food on a flat top rather than a true grill. I did not ask how it's grilled here and should have. My fish was delicious (I do not eat any shellfish); however, it did taste like, well, grilled and I do not care for the char-broiled taste of a grill. This is not a complaint against the establishment or the food...just pointing out my personal preference to advise others.
My husband had the chowder, once again I had a quart of iced tea and yes, we shared Key Lime Pie for dessert. When we were in the Keys in 2018, we ate several pieces of Key Lime Pie. This was our only piece this year and it may have been the best I've ever eaten anywhere.
We hope to visit Islamorada again in the future and the Shrimp Shack is now at the top of our list for a delicious meal. And their prices are better than some of the pricier establishments...
Read moreMy mom and I came in to have our fresh catch cooked for us!! We ordered the sampler and the fish dip to start! The shrimp fritters were awesome! Very flavorful. The other items kind of blended together. The fish dip was very dry and bland. We were hoping for lemon to squeeze on it but the server never came back over for us to ask. For dinner, we brought hog fish. We had it prepared picatta style and continental. The fish was prepared perfectly! Very good flavor! We ordered onion straws and received onion rings. Our server came as soon as the food got there so we were able to exchange them for a baked potato. Never saw her again. We didn’t get a second beverage or even a water. After about 10 minutes of waiting on her , I got my own boxes and noticed our server was also the bartender. Went to the bar to ask for to go scallions (for the potato- and was charged for them), a to-go bag, desert togo, and a check. She came over and informed us that 18% gratuity was added to the check. There was only 2 of us. The service was horrible. She never even came back to offer us another beverage! Tables of 6 or more get grat! Not us! And when we asked why, she replied “was there a problem?” My strawberry shortcake was served together with a cold biscuit, ice cream, and frozen strawberries. Together although it was Togo. The fish was great, but the service was horrible! We will...
Read moreStopped in for a casual dinner on our last night in Islamorada, wish we had come sooner. We were greeted and seated quickly by a friendly young man. The tables are roomy and neatly covered with white butcher paper for easy clean up. We started our meal with the shrimp chowder, which was a hearty tomato broth with veggies and small shrimp. I added a bit of their signature hot sauce to pep it up to my taste. Rolls and a little nut loaf came as we waited briefly for our food. They have tap beer specials as well as some tropical cocktails; we opted for unsweet tea. It was served in quart sized ball jars, so no need for refills for us. For entree I chose blackened shrimp tacos, 4 flour tortillas filled with shrimp, cabbage, tomatoes and cheese, with a side of awesome black beans and rice. My sweetie had the key lime shrimp over Angel hair pasta, in a smooth buttery sauce. The shrimp were medium sized and a generous portion. Our server was helpful and efficient. We were too full for dessert, but the key lime pie with chocolate ganache was really tempting. Definitely recommend this place for a great meal in comfortable...
