Hot Wok — Restaurant in Jacksonville

The place isn't aesthetically pleasing. The service is poor. The food leaves a lot to be desired; mostly due to the service. Has potential, but does meet expectations.

I made the mistake of assuming that the cluttered dining room meant that the food and service must be exceptional... but that is not the case. I would be very weary to bring a child in, as they have 'adult items' on display at the checkout counter. There was an open vibrator for the whole world to see. I am unsure if there is some sort of drop-shipping business being run out of there... and maybe these are the returns?

My husband ordered an appetizer and then turned to me for my meal. When it was my turn I asked for a bourbon chicken and some fried rice. I asked if they had a combo or something becuase I wanted a full meal. There was a brief pause waiting for a response to my question... The answer never came; but she did respond eventually by repeating my order back to me. Then, my husband ordered his meal. Before he could finish talking, the woman taking our order just decided we were done and verbally cut him off with the total for the bill..... I'm not going to press someone to let me spend money in their business... Plus, we don't know what kind of day she had or what... so I let it go. I was thirsty, but I didn't see a ton of drink options, and I wasn't going to fight for a potentially overpriced can of anything anyways.

I realized when we got in the car, she had made the executive descision to put "plain fried rice" on the ticket. I did not ask for that, nor would I have paid for it. I like peas and carrots and all I got was a box of starch and salt; some fiber would have been nice... especially at the price point. I can only assume that is their standard 'fried rice' now and it makes me sad. The bourbon chicken tasted more like sugary syrup than anything else. There were some bits of broccoli with the bourbon chicken, but it was mushy and I prefer a lightly steamed vegetable. The meat was a bit fatty, but was moist and tender.

The positives: The rice was properly cooked. The packaging was clean and nice. The food was nice and warm. There were 3 tables and a few chairs we were able to sit and wait for our food at. We could have eaten there (only 2 of us).

Could easily be better, but not a very good...

I travel back and forth to take my 14 year old son to cancer treatment. I ordered through Uber eats and accidentally put in the wrong address and my first thought was to immediately cancel and reorder as I had placed the order less than 2 minutes prior. It was my first time ordering through Uber eats and I was not aware that they would take my money and not refund me. The email stated that the merchant excepted the order and they will still be paid but I would not get my food. I reached out to Uber eats and they were not helpful and pretty much told me that there was nothing they could do and I would not be refunded. I called hot wok and they were absolutely amazing. Having no idea how much of a panic I was in, thinking I had just lost $60 and wasn’t going to get my food. They advised me to reach out to Uber eats which I had already done. I tried reaching out to them a second time explaining that I could just pick up my food if they were already paying the merchant. They told me no, that I would be out all that money and to pay more attention next time. To my surprise I got a call from hot wok who offered to reach out to them, they called me back and sorted everything out and allowed me to come pick up my food. This place has to really suck, 17 one star's in the last 29 reviews.. BUYER BEWARE. (should have came here first)I wrote a review on there web site but they would not allow it to be shown to the public. because Yes, it was that bad. First they blamed me for my food being 2 hours late, They said they called my # and they did, (3x's) what they didn't do is call the other # that was there. What I got was Over cooked chicken with no sauce, Steam dumplings with NO sauce, you ever try steam dumplings with no sauce? it does not work. Rice which was hard and dry. Tasted old. Sweet tea tasted like they brewed it threw a coffee machine. Disgusting!
