Hagen's Fish Market is great, neighborhood fish market! It's not in MY neighborhood, but you can go there, and they'll be happy to see you.
They offer a small variety of really great seafood in varying forms. Their smoked fish is delicious and reasonably priced for a standalone shop. There is smoked sable, salmon, whole mackerel, and something called salmon candy, a lightly sweet smoked salmon.
Hagen's also offers some fried food and sandwich items, like hush puppies, mushrooms, and shrimp po boys. I tried to get an oyster po boy, but they only didn't have the bulk oysters. However, if I'd wanted, I could've about some whole oysters to shuck and eat.
They have a few types of cold salads, and raw seafood items, as well. There are some in their main display cases, but also items like pickled herring, and frozen seafood, in cooler and freezer cases along two of Hagen's walls. There is a small amount of grocery accompaniments, like squid ink pasta, a variety of crackers, sardines and anchovies, etc.
The staff is very friendly and helpful, but it's truly a tiny place, so be prepared to wait in a line outside. Right now, I think their indoor limit is 5 five people at one time. That's whether ordering or not, so be considerate and patient, you may be standing in line while someone you're with waits outside. The plus side of that, however, is that...
Read moreI stopped in Hagen's today for the very first time and I'm sooo glad I did! Very warm & friendly staff, really great food, and really cool market options! I ordered smoked salmon candy, which tasted Perfectly smoked with just the right amount of salt, which for me means it's not overly salted. It was delicious! I also ordered a bunch of fried goodies, including smelts, lake perch, scallops, calamari, cheese curds, and hush puppies. I loved that each were breaded with different taste & style of breading, which for me, allowed the fish to shine! And this breading was not heavy, to hide anything, like some places! The fish was fresh & excellent quality! And, To my surprise & delight, this fried food traveled well, as I live a little over 30 minutes away!
Lastly, the market itself! I felt like I was in a little town shop outside of the city for some reason and I loved that! They had so many interesting items, like the gooseberry preserves I picked up! I've only ever seen gooseberries in certain fruit markets, but never tried them but thanks to Hagen's Fish Market - I get to try them out in some form!
I will definitely go back to Hagen's - whether I'm in the area or I take a special trip - especially for that smoked...
Read moreI discovered this absolute gem of a spot by happenstance due to occasionally working in the area. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. They have a large variety of sauces, canned goods, crackers, etc. (basically whatever you could possibly want to go with a seafood meal). Behind the counter, they also have an amazing variety of fresh seafood, in-house smoked fish, and salads.
But the star of the show, for me, is their takeout menu. I've had the shrimp po boy, the crab cake, and fried clam strips - all of which were excellent. The prices are great too. The last time I was there, I was craving calamari but also wanted a sandwich. I asked if they could substitute calamari for the shrimp in the po boy. The lady behind the counter was super nice and accommodating, as they always are there. Best seafood sandwich of any kind that I've ever had in my life!
10/10 would reccomend to anyone. We need to preserve these small neighborhood spots at all costs before there's nothing left but Jewel, Marianos, and Whole Foods on every corner. Great food, great service,...
