Located right below Canopy by Hilton at Marin Blvd, Grove st; this is an Indian desert place with their main outlet in Edison. The ambiance is good but mostly with south indian songs playing there so it feels like you are straight away transported to Hyderabad minus the biryani!
The service was good as the server was happy with me trying out various flavors while being patient with me. I tried raw mango, lychee, kesar pistachio, Punjabi spl ( orange, mango and pineapple mix), fig, custard apple and chickoo before finally settling on custard apple and chickoo. I did notice that they make their ice creams from real fruit which gives them the taste close to the Naturals ice cream brand( Indians from India will relate to this). The downside of their product is that it's a bit pricey (can understand given the location) while the quantity which has been served isn't up to the mark... Usually the other ice cream outlets will end up serving a lot for the similar price!
Overall a welcome addition to the Jersey City community, while hoping they improve on the...
Read moreIt's been so long since I've tasted something genuinely new in ice cream that I forgot it was even a thing that was possible. Well, Harvys has done it and done it again, with their selection South Asian-inspired flavors, all of which are richly unique and exciting. There is a tendency for ice cream flavors either towards only a single ingredient ("lemon"), or towards gratuitous excess (Ben & Jerry's-style). These Punjabi flavors are more subtle combinations of spices, creams, and small bits of dried fruit and nuts that form a cohesive whole, taking on the "single flavor" quality of the high end ice creams while secretly carrying a lot more complexity in their construction and taste. If it sounds like I'm gushing, I am. It's great to see people pushing the envelope and breaking conventions, let alone to do it so...
Read moreUpdate after 2nd try of the kati roll: The kati roll was not what a kati roll should be. It was a tasteless, soggy mess with barely any paneer. This time I made sure it didn't have cucumbers and mayo and was even asked about my preferred spice level (this didn't happen the first time). I'm glad it was complementary but still a disappointment. Ice cream is still great.
I was really looking forward to trying the savory options. I got a paneer bhurji kathi roll this evening that tasted awful -- I feel sick and am very disappointed. The kathi roll lacked any flavor and was super greasy. I've never had a kathi roll with diced cucumbers, onion, tomato and a white sauce (mayo?). This would be ok if the paneer bhurji wasn't so bland. I will not be coming back for their new menu items - my advice would be to stick to...
