Martin City Tavern - South Plaza — Restaurant in Kansas City

I live in Texas and was staying in the KU med area. I packed up my car and left the hotel in search of fish and chips. I was parked in a Starbucks across the street from Frick and Frack, one of my favorite places. But their dinner special was hamburgers, and I could not consume any gut bombs because my stomach was already torn up.

I drove to a cool restaurant in Westport and found my anxiety. That area is so chaotic it vexes my spirit. In addition, there is no parking. Or rather it’s very limited.

I searched out three more places and finally landed on Martin City Tavern. It was important for me to be able to park in view of my table. I am traveling and my car is completely packed full of music equipment and my other gear. I don’t like to leave my car unattended.

I found this restaurant situated on a quiet street with plenty of street parking. In addition, they have a parking lot in the back. I entered at 8:45 PM and the crowd was minimal. They close at 10 PM.

When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by three different people. I spotted upholstered booths in the distance and requested to be seated there. My server, Scott, had kind eyes and a disarming disposition. He was extremely attentive as well as very hospitable.

My fish and chips arrived and I have to say they’re probably the best I’ve ever tasted. They were very tender and flaky and homemade. I have never tasted fish so delicious. More important to me than wonderful fried fish are fries that are temperature hot and my fries were!

It is not often that I reach for my phone while still parked in front of the restaurant for which I want to write a review. Usually, I have to search out time in my schedule to collect my thoughts and post. But the outstanding service and food here were so wonderful, I almost didn’t wanna leave. In addition, the ambience was clean and contemporary.

Our server was kind and attentive. She was new but knowledgeable. I ordered the build your own pizza, vegetarian and the brussel sprouts sans bacon. My pizza was perfect from the golden brown crust to the fresh jalapenos and red peppers. My daughter had the bowl with salmon and pretzel bites. She commented on the perfection of the salmon and tastiness of her broccoli & red peppers.

The new Plaza location is fantastic! Great decor/space and the new menu items are top notch. We’re regulars at the LS and Martin City locations so we tried all the things we can’t get there: onion Strings, delicious, cheese curds, so light & crispy!
