This should have been a 5 star experience, as Stock Hill is a beautiful and modern fine dining establishment. The Chef is incredible, the dishes he has created clearly matter to him and the dining itself was second to none. The front of house staff was wonderful, even when I called to confirm we would be a few minutes late for our reservation. They were equally wonderful when we arrived and remembered we were celebrating a birthday and had a staff signed card at our table. Our waitress was great, she has incredible knowledge of the menu she is serving, she has a good memory for her patrons preferences and seemed to more or less enjoy her job. HOWEVER- my party of 5 completely lost our appetite and expedited ending our entire night out after we were EXTREMELY insulted and offended at the attitude and condescending comments from the tall and thin women that seems to work directly with the bar. She may have been the GM or bar manager based on how she was dressed (I sincerely hope she is neither) but, when she brought one of our rounds of drinks, it appeared that she was inquiring about who had what (understandable, since she was not our main server) and in an attempt to be helpful, I politely began to point her towards the respective person. After waving her hand at me like you swat at a fly, she said verbatim and in an offensive and condescending tone:
“Sweetie I know where they go, I wasn’t asking but thank you so much for trying to be the director.”
I don’t care who she is or what her title is, I have never had an outing soured so quickly in my adult life. Our entire party was offended, the majority of us lost our appetites and we all agreed that the size of her ego was much more impressive then her extremely weak and rude customer service skills.
GM, bar manager, waitress……it doesn’t matter. That kind of person demeans the hard work and efforts of everyone else in the company that made the effort to offer us professional and extraordinary customer service.
She knows who she is. And she needs a refresher in proper interaction and approach when interacting with fine dining clientele, especially at this price point. And if she DOES hold a position of high priority, I sincerely hope that other Stock Hill patrons are lucky enough to avoid her.
5 stars to the chef. 5 stars to the waitress. 5 stars to design and ambiance. 2 stars for consistency of service. 1 star for...
Read moreMy wife and I had a wonderful Christmas 2020 together. We shared our cold Kansas City night with the staff at Sock Hill.
Stock Hill is inside the old Kansas City Board of Trades building and opened in December of 2017, so it is a relatively new building. Don't let this discourage you because the building is among some of the most beautiful designs in KC. Everything is expertly laid out in the building. The bar is in the restaurant's center as you first walk in from the large glass doors off the main street. As the hostess greats you, it is hard not to stare at the grand chandeliers and fifteen-foot bar with a somewhat brass-colored manly accent to it. The staff immediately sat us near the kitchen that is sprawling across the left side of the building.
Everyone working at Stock Hill has a job, and to say attentiveness was their goal is an understatement. Everything from water, silverware, cleaning the white table cloth, and finally, handling our order with great care. It was Christmas, so the staff was bustling about in fun hats and smiles, eager to help, making our experience even more enjoyable.
My wife had red wine, and I had a mixed whiskey drink. My drink had a delightful smoked ice taste to it and hit home on a cold night nicely. We ordered a crispy veal with sweet read crust and XO sauce appetizer. The veal melted in our mouths, savoring every bite with our drinks was worth the time. Next, I ordered a Wagyu filet, crab meat, and lobster tail dish. The dish was thoughtfully designed to make sure the meat resting juice did not muddle the seafood taste. My wife had an Amish chicken with potatoes and cheery tomatoes. The only disappointment of the evening was her chicken being a little dry but still full of flavor. Luckily my dish was larger enough to share.
We ended our memorable Christmas evening with dessert and coffee. I had a salted truffle tart, and my wife had a bit of honey bread pudding. Both were a fantastic choice and put the close of our fabulous evening to a finish by thanking the staff with a large Christmas night tip.
Chef Nic Bandelie does a fantastic job showing KC why Stock Hill won the 31 best steakhouses in America. I would give the restaurant a 4.25 out if five stars only because of the dry chicken. My wife and I will absolutely...
Read moreWhat should have been a wonderfully planned evening, was a disaster. Celebrating our wedding anniversary, our daughters made a reservation at Stock Hill. One daughter made the reservation online and then called the restaurant and talked with an Assistant Manager, gave him specific details about what she was hoping for the evening (drinks, appetizer, dinner, dessert) and gave him her credit card number for payment. My husband order the chef special, fish, with so many bones that it was embarrassing as he picked them out of his mouth. We actually told our assistant server, who apologized and said she'd let the chef know. Our main server told us the fish was like "grouper" which shouldn't have had any bones at all. Our evening progressed with no mention of our anniversary but our server was very attentive to the group of six women at the table next to ours. They did look like they were having a very enjoyable evening! There were many celebrations that evening (October 15, 2022) as we saw lots of desserts with sparklers being delivered. As our dinner closed, we ordered dessert, our check was delivered. We asked to speak with a manager and when we did, he apologized, pulled a sticky note out of his pocket with all of my daughter's credit card info on it and told us they were short staffed. He came back with a gift card which was nice but didn't even cover the cost of our meal. We also told him our awful the Chef Special fish dinner was and they did NOT remove it from our bill. My daughter finally was able to reach the general manager (not sure of his title) and he told her that HE had spoken to us on that evening which he did not. He was going to check on the issues and call her back. She never heard from him again. What an absolute mess and such a disappointment. I'd be glad to receive a call, email or communication of any kind from someone at this restaurant. Expectations are very low. They could have covered our meal in total, that evening, and we would have just walked away. Additionally, the hostess should have known of our special occasion before we even walked through the door. And our server should have asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. Poor service, terrible Chef Special. Hope they...
