We were eager to give this place a try since their rebirth in the Katy Asian Town (they were originally right off of Bellaire Blvd in the "old" Chinatown). We ordered several items: Cha Siu, pan fried beef noodles, Peking Duck, saucy noodle rolls, sizzling black pepper beef, and pi pa tofu.
The Cha Siu was ok, the portion was rather small for the price, and any hint of the traditional aromatic bbq flavor was masked by the drizzle of soy sauce. The soy sauce taste over-powered everything. The pork was very juicy though, but that's about it.
The Peking Duck was also underwhelming. The duck skin was not crispy, and the duck meat itself is under seasoned. I felt like the whole dish could have used a bit more salt, or more time over the fire to get more of a roasted taste/aroma. The presentation is nice though, served on a nice tray with your herbs and sauces. The thin flour crepe was kept warm in a small bamboo steamer.
The pan fried beef noodles are good, albeit it can use a smidge more salt. The noodles are nice and crispy, with tender beef and blanched Chinese broccoli. The sauce was just thick enough to coat the noodles, which I liked. Portion size is not bad.
The saucy noodle roll was ok, this dish feels more like an acquired taste than anything. The noodles are fresh, hot, and super soft. They are drizzled with sesame and hoisin sauces and sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. Not bad, but it's personally not my cup of tea. Give it a try, you might like it.
An interesting dish is the pi pa tofu. Light tofu is mixed with some shrimp and lightly fried, accompanied with a savory sauce. I think if they added in crispy garlic pieces, it'll really elevate the dish a bit more, and give it a textural difference. Not bad.
Finally the sizzling black pepper beef. You can't go wrong with this at any Chinese restaurant. The dish comes out piping hot, still sizzling on the iron plate. The beef is tender, and the caramelized onion goes well with jasmine rice. My two main gripes are the portion size, it's a bit small, and more seasoning. It can also use a little bit more salt, and oddly enough more black pepper. There was visually crushed black pepper in the dish, but the peppery zing didn't come through in the mouth.
Overall the food was ok/average, and the portion size can be bigger to reflect the pricing and better match other restaurants in the area. Service was good though, and the staff...
Read morePeking duck was not very impressive. The skin is not that crunchy. Good presentation though. Fair price. $33 for half duck. Congee still at the best on the list. Taste like the old location. But the only thing changed is they only give one piece of abalone on the chicken and abalone congee. Next time I will just order chicken congee instead. A little over price. $14 only one piece of abalone. I rather you put more slices of the low quality abalone to make it looks more presentable like the old location. The XO sauce rice cake taste really good. The texture hits right to the spots. Highly recommended. Reasonable price for $10. Roasted Pork Belly not the same anymore. So sad it doesn't taste the same like before. No more crunchiness like before. The skin is too chewy like it was the left over. It will taste better if you put in the oven or air fryer to heat it up for a few minutes to make the skin crunchier. The price is way over. For 9 pieces of roasted pork belly with some mustard sauce for $18. I can easily get a whole soy sauce chicken or add a few bucks to get a whole duck in China Town.
I live far from Katy and I like to support local business. This is one of my favorite restaurant before in China Town. I will come back for the congee and give a second try for the rest. If nothing changed, I will just order chicken congee from them and pick up some roast pork at...
