My only regret is that it is 60 miles from my house. That said, I would, and will, make the trip again. Let me start by giving a bit of my back story. My wife and I have been to well over one-hundred breweries. We have been to breweries ranging in size from producing only 3 or 4 beers all the way up to Sierra Nevada Brewery in Ashville. We have toured many breweries, including The Beer Geek tour at Sierra Nevada. We've been to breweries in a dozen states, coast to coast. Now that I have given you a bit of info about my credentials, let me tell you about the incredible experience we had at Horned Owl. My wife and I sat at the bar and were greeted by Anna. Anna did something no other server has done before. She asked us questions, several questions. Her questions went far beyond, "What kind of beer do you like?" Each question she asked led to another question. We both ordered a flight, and we are both IPA drinkers, with slightly different preferences in the hop to floral ratio. She settled on our selections and they were all magnificent. We found out that Anna doesn't care for IPA's and leans toward the darker beers, yet her knowledge of flavor profiles is unparalleled. She offered suggestions typically reserved for a seasoned hophead. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, Chris showed up. He offered up more incredible conversation to discover I also had an affinity toward the sour beers. He told me the low down on a couple of their sours and made a couple suggestions. Guess what. He was spot on. Long story short. My wife and I tried a dozen different beers with varying flavor profiles and each one was unique and delicious. Be sure to ask for Anna or Chris and they will lead you down the path to beer greatness. (I cannot attest to the rest of the team at H.O.B., but I'm sure...
Read moreCame here for trivia night, and that part was fun! The host was great! Atmosphere is more like a college campus coffee house as opposed to a brewery/pub/nightlife setting. It was very bright and more of a daytime aesthetic. Chairs were all hard-wood, backless barstools, and very uncomfortable. I had to leave early because my spine wasn't taking the seats well, and I'm in pain from sitting on them after 10 minutes. The rest of the evening, I had to stand. Very clean, though! It's kind of a rustic vibe. The beer selections seemed enticing, but after trying several, they were all very similar flavor profiles. Hoppy and bitter even in the stouts and Hefs. Having a complete beer profile with IBUs listed would've been great. I'm not sure if that's a metric that can be used for small batch brews, though. Food was..... about as 'good' as QT or Racetrac but at 2x-3x the price. Typical drunk food fare like pretzels and hotdogs, and whatever can be cooked in a small convection oven and covered in canned cheese. It's great that they let you bring your own food because this isn't the place you go to eat unless you like the above-mentioned school lunch menu. Probably won't be back but I'm sure it's more for some...
Read moreLong-time customer/fan of Horned Owl until tonight. New general manager is very uninviting (did not realize she was the GM until leaving). As soon as you walked through the doors, you could tell the staff was on edge/scared. Denied some of my requests, such as my boyfriend bringing back a drink for he & I to our table(which she had seen us sitting at for roughly an hour prior and checked on us and we had an outstanding tab). She had an overall bad attitude that came off as insincere and unwelcoming to other groups. She also wouldn’t serve me a flavored frozen seltzer. Other patrons had gotten the flavored frozen seltzer and recommended it to us but when we asked for it we were told by her that “it was against the rules.” I asked another employee why it was a rule, and he attempted to fulfill the request, but was intercepted by the GM and reprimanded.
I was very disappointed that with a more limited selection of sour beers that a request to have a flavored frozen talon was rejected as “it was against the rules” when other patrons had the frozen drink flavored and the menu specified that the talon seltzer came with a flavor. We probably won’t be back to Horned Owl in the...
