This is the second time I've dined at Apis and feel the need to talk about the food. For the prices, we were very underwhelmed each time.
Biggest issue is with the steaks. I ordered a ribeye the first time with no extra toppings (like Parmesan, Bernaise sauce etc.). It came out very under-seasoned and had these fake grill marks on it instead of a nice little crust from a good sear. Okay, not the end of the world but would not order again. Last night we went again and my husband ordered the filet. It did come out medium rare as asked, but it came out with those same fake grill marks and had a lattice cut across the top of the steak. The meat itself was borderline mushy as if something had been done to over-tenderize the meat (which is entirely unnecessary with a decent quality filet which is already a very tender cut). My husband loves steak and he didn't finish it. The accompanying French fries were like McDonald's fries that had been sitting a while. No crispiness, didn't taste fresh at all.
The crispy brussels sprouts. The first time we went to Apis I really liked them! They were nicely done, served on a small platter with bacon, pomegranate seeds, and balsamic drizzle. Last night I was excited to order these, but what they brought to the table was a giant bowl of COMPLETELY BLACK sprouts. Husband and I tried them and they were burnt through, it wasn't just the balsamic. I did alert our waiter and they were replaced with a slightly better batch but still overcooked. For $15 this was crazy. Should also probably be half the portion size and half the price.
Husband ordered the fried ravioli which were fine, but nothing special.
I ordered the salmon entree. The salmon was actually good, nothing special but cooked well. The spinach and mushroom components felt a bit like an afterthought. The potatoes served with them actually tasty--the ones that weren't burned. I like a few crispy bits of potato but the kitchen seemed intent on serving really overcooked veggies last night.
The GOOD THINGS we experience there were the service--friendly and attentive service and they were genuinely apologetic about mistakes. The mixologist/bartender is also amazing, I had great cocktails last time I was there and this time asked for a bartender's choice of non-alcoholic mocktail. I just said I like citrus and not too sweet, and he made the perfect grapefruit drink!
If Apis can fix the issues with the chefs/kitchen and learn how to make a proper steak, I would really...
Read moreMy husband and I dined here at the end of January. We were seated right away on a balcony seat that had a birds eye view of the restaurant. The modern and minimalist aesthetic of the restaurant was unlike any other restaurant I’ve found in Kenosha. The wait staff was professional in service and appearance. The cleanliness was also a positive.
However the five different dishes we ordered were all under seasoned and surprisingly small portion sizes for the price points. It was disappointing because all the reviews for this restaurant raved about the food. We ordered pretzel bites, phyllo wrapped spinach artichoke, short rib sliders, birrias tacos, and pumpkin ravioli. All of the dishes left something to be desired.
The pretzel bites was the only dish where I felt we got our money’s worth, however the dip tasted a little processed and cheap. The spinach artichoke bites (3) were 90% phyllo wrap and 10% filling. The short rib sliders patties were undersized so there was a lot of bun hanging out on the sides, the patties were super thick and overcooked. The meat was not tender and gamey tasting. They skimped on the pickled red onions on the sand which itself. It was a very dry and chewy experience. The tacos were good but extremely greasy, and the meat seemed old and processed. The pumpkin ravioli was the nightmare dish of the night. It was 14 dollars for three ravioli, it was drowning in a brown butter sage sauce, the pasta itself was over cooked to the point of feeling like you were gnawing on rubber. The filling was about half a teaspoon (extremely underfilled). The flavors were there and promising however it was still under seasoned and the rubbery texture killed the dish.
We spent close to $80 and everything disappointed in one way or another. The waiter said that their menu will change in a month or so. If the restaurant is reading this review, please use some salt in your next round of dishes. And please consider increasing portion sizes or fillings so that everything is well balanced.
Another disappointment was the water glass refills, they were constant which was nice but they use what looks to be a wine bottle to fill the water glasses. Every time we had our water glasses refilled, it took about a minute. It killed the conversation every time. APIS, please find some nice looking pitchers to refill water glasses in a fraction...

My wife and I had a reservation for brunch. In the reservation it asked me to provide any details necessary for our reservation. I had mentioned that I had a gluten allergy and that we were celebrating my wifes birthday. I had to ask for a gluten friendly menu ( of which they wrote down a make shift menu that was even not up todate with the current menu) and my wife's birthday was never mentioned.
The lack of gluten free options compared to the regular menu was poor and the waitress couldn't even tell me what half the modified menu was. Maybe this is an opportunity for the chef to come and talk through the menu with me. I've had this happen at multiple highclass restaurants that didn't readily have a gluten free menu. And there was no gluten free bread. In today's age this expected of every restaurant I go to.
Our cocktail drinks we were ordered were spot on, but the rest of the food and service was mediocre compared to the menu prices and the eloquent space. The waitress already seemed frazzled so we did not want to make our service somehow slower and worse by making complaints.
My wife had the giant cinnamon role which was burnt and not sweet, other than the frosting. We both got The Usual and she got the reg sausage and I tried the chicken sausage both were salt bombs. Neither one of us could finish ours. The toast her order came with was unbuttered and the waitress did not ask if she wanted butter or anything with it. She had to ask. And then was given a apricot jam with no other options. She hated it.
I really hope that this review isn't read as a complain gripe or with any ill intent. This is such a beautiful place and location that I would hate for such inconsistencies in service make it a less than desirable experience. The potatoes and eggs were perfect and I mean perfect. So along with the drinks there is enough there to see potential. But our experience made us feel like we wanted to leave early and try again, but maybe at...
