Without knowing what to expect, my family went to Serenity Moon Tea to explore and try a few teas.
The owner was gracious. It was a high traffic Saturday, but she served everyone who came in personally.
The atmosphere was very relaxed. Numerous repeat customers stopped by for refills of their favorites, and some just wanted bubble tea. On Sundays and Mondays, you can book tea parties and tastings at a traditional table. Thus I believe that without booking in advance, you should plan to go Tuesday through Saturday.
We got much the same experience. Having smelled from sample tins the many varieties available, ranging across red, white, green, oolong, pu'er, black, and herbal varieties, we settled on a few of interest and sat near the window at the tasting table, along with another pair who had chosen their varieties. The owner brewed tea for us and talked a lot about her preferred methods for doing so. For someone like me who is new to the scene, this was fun and educational. We had red, black, green, and oolong teas in small cups and discussed how they changed through repeated brews.
Our tasting was often interrupted due to the volume of customers on Saturday. The owner recommended coming during the week when it was less busy. I recommend that if you are interested in this aspect of the shop, you have an open block of time and let it play out slowly. Even though it took a while, we were really happy we waited and got the rich experience. If you want to do this without purchasing any tea, you can do it for $10.
There were a variety of tea sets and accessories available. I don't know if there are large differences between Japanese and Chinese materials, but this shop seems to focus on Chinese teas and accessories for Gong Fu. Compared to a video of a traditional Gong Fu tea ceremony, I noted some similarities between the tasting and the tools and preparation of the ceremony. The biggest difference was the owner's vivacious talk and education as we went.
We had a great time and look forward to another visit. We bought a small tea set, pictured here, and some new to us oolong...
Read moreI visited my brother in Kent for a couple weeks and we both decided to check out this place as we were coming out of Safeway. I actually thought it was just gonna be a regular bubble tea place, but boy was I wrong-and I'm glad I was. Upon entering, the owner, Mako, was tending to some people at her counter but was very polite and accommodated my brother and I when she had the chance. Instead of grabbing a bubble tea or a tea latte like I intended, I decided to just have a hot cup of organic green jasmine and it was one of the best decisions I've made upon arriving in Kent! I have only seen one other employee at Xiu Xian, I believe her name is Jewel. Like Mako, she is VERY helpful and accommodating, and she has a great laid-back vibe. A couple weeks later before I left to go back home, we did a tea tasting session, as Mako had been politely urging us to do during our last few visits. This lady is so nice and informative, she taught us the history of green tea and we tasted 3 of her best selections. Although tea tastings are free, you are required to pay $10 worth of tea or any other drinks and it was only right that we left with at least $40 worth of stuff! I definitely recommend this place for tea lovers, even if you are new to tea. The owner is a down-to-earth, genuine person and her tea is divine! This is definitely the place I will always look forward to coming to...
Read moreMy partner and I visited this shop on a whim after lunch one day. We saw the teas and instantly had an inclination to go inside. Upon entering we were greeted with the warmest smile by the owner at the counter. We looked around and got a couple of her in house mixes. My partner and I got super excited to have a tea shop down the street from our home. We went home and had the delicious teas. Yesterday we went back with the intention to get some more tea and possibly do a tea tasting. So we grabbed 3 different kinds of teas to taste. We sat at the counter with her for around 30 minutes as she engaged us in a world of knowledge revolved around Tea. We left knowing a lot more about tea than when we initially walked through the door. We left the shop super pleased with our purchases and the tea tasting experience. We love supporting small businesses so if you’re in the market to support a minority woman owned business please make sure to stop by and support Serenity Moon! Her prices are very affordable and her products are high quality! She also sells warm/cold drinks! We got two of the lavender/jasmine latte’s. Its one of the most delicious drinks I’ve ever had.
P.S if you go for a tasting the owner suggested that the 1-4pm window is...
