Old Town Bakery: Key Lime Pie Heaven â The October 9th Revelation
If youâre on the hunt for the ultimate key lime pie experience, allow me to direct you to the unassuming gem of Key West: Old Town Bakery. Let me paint the pictureâit's October 9th, the winds are howling, and after two trips across the island in a fevered, sugar-fueled quest, I found myself at the counter of what would soon become my personal pie oasis. Over the course of two days and 12 key lime pies (yes, you read that rightâtwelve), Iâd suffered through pies that ranged from decent to downright tragic. My pie hopes were dangling by a thread. But then, at 1:30 PM on that fateful day, everything changed.
I walked into Old Town Bakery, eyes glazed over from too much sugar, expecting just another ordinary slice. But the cashier? They knew. I didnât even need to speak. With the calm precision of a seasoned pie professional, they handed me a slice of their legendary key lime pie like they knew it was about to change my life. No questions, no judgment, just straight to the point: âKey lime pie?â
And let me tell you, this pie was the truth.
The crust had that elusive balance of buttery and crumbly perfectionâsolid enough to hold up but delicate enough to melt in your mouth. The filling was like a symphony of tart and sweet, hitting all the right notes without overpowering one another. Every bite was a journey. That whipped cream on top? It wasnât just a garnish; it was the finishing touch to a masterpiece, so light and fluffy I half-expected it to float off my fork.
But what truly made this experience legendary wasnât just the pieâit was the cashier. This wasnât just a transaction; it felt like an act of pie salvation. They handled the whole process with an air of knowing confidence. It was as if they had seen hundreds like me beforeâexhausted from bad pies, desperate for redemption. In their hands, this wasnât just key lime pie; it was the pie that would set my soul right again.
As I stood there, basking in the glory of that slice, it hit meâOld Town Bakery is the best kept secret on the island. Forget the other spots claiming to have the best pie. They donât even come close. On October 9th, my long and perilous pie journey came to an end, and it was Old Town Bakery that delivered me to the promised land.
But Iâve got to be honest with you: thereâs one thing that tops it, and thatâs the key lime donut at Glazed. Yeah, I know, itâs bold to say, but that donut? Itâs on another level of key lime goodness. That said, if you're after a pie that could make you rethink your life's choices in the best way, Old Town Bakery is still the place to be.
So, if youâre serious about your key lime experience, hit up Old Town Bakery for the best pie in town, then maybeâjust maybeâswing by Glazed for the donut that could change the game entirely. Your taste buds deserve...
Read moreWe go here every time we visit. Always used to love it and would always make a point of going a couple of times every visit. We have our favorite things that we get every time. This past visit though, we got all of our usual favorites and found them to be lacking compared to what they once were. Quite a bit less chocolate in the chocolate croissant. Barely any really. The sticky rolls all looked and tasted overcooked and had almost no pecans. Mine had 2 small pecans. Very dry and crusty. Ham and cheese croissant seemed like it had less as well. Maybe just a bad day and I'm sure we will be back to try again, but we definitely noticed a big difference this time. Super disappointed the sticky buns almost seemed burnt. Also tried their key lime pie this time but usually don't so can't say whether it has changed, but it was not good. If the quality stays like this we will likely...
Read moreLooking at other reviews I guess it was an off day for them. Got there at 730 and there were 3 other people in front of us. Took about 20 minutes to get 2 iced chais and danishes - so so slow.
One woman who was there when we got there and had ordered sandwiches had to finally ask after 15 minutes where her sandwiches were. The woman working checked and saw the other person working had made them but they were just sitting behind the counter, having never been given to the girl ("there's a different sandwich maker and she doesn't speak English" was the excuse offered).
The woman working the register was friendly but sloooooowwww and couldn't multitask. The pastries were amazing and iced chais terrific, but it was such an odd experience it's hard to recommend. I bet the 5 people in line after us are...
