We went to eat here on Tuesday evening as it had good ratings. Overall it was a very mixed experience with more bad than good.
The cocktails were great, especially the bushwacker (although the water tastes like the ocean, I would bring my own bottled water).
Things started going downhill when the hushpuppies came out. They were way too sweet and dusted with powdered sugar. The butter was sweet as well. The bread didn’t really have a taste of cornmeal at all, just light cake with a crust. Maybe it’s another style but we didn’t care for it - couldn’t even eat a whole piece.
Our actual appetizer was the hot crab dip. Things really took a bad turn here. We were very excited to try it and it looked great - how can you cook love hot cheese dip with some crab with bruschetta? Well the crab was not fresh and really had seen better days. The entire app was inedible and the waitress asked us why we hardly touched it. Her response was “yeah that happens sometimes - we’re not Maryland!” Which I found a bit rude. Of course the appetizer was not taken off our bill and no effort was made to make it up to us except to take the plate of old crab dip away.
My entree itself - the red snapper with crab and hollandaise - was amazing. This crab was not fishy and seemed fresh. So the hot crab dip app is likely using older stock or even premade a while ago. Yuck.
My spouse’s entree, shrimp pasta, was just okay. The shrimp were nice and big but texture was off, like they were quickly thawed or overcooked, and there was a piece of shell still on one of them. The pasta itself had little flavor, lacked freshness, and overall not very appetizing. Nothing special and definitely something you can get at a fast casual restaurant for better quality and or lower price. Definitely not worth $28. My spouse ended up not eating this and we traded meals since I could somewhat enjoy this meal and didn’t want them more upset by this experience.
At the end of the meal the waitress will bring out a plate from the fridge to show you all the desert options. It’s a cute gimmick to show it this way and almost made us bite but we were just too disappointed with our meals to try anything else.
All in all we spent over $120 on very unsatisfying meals for two. I would look elsewhere unless you’re willing to...
Read moreThe first Spring Break food adventure we had was at Miller's Seafood & Steak House in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Miller's is an aqua-themed casual joint serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Hush puppies came complimentary. They were fried to a golden brown, sprinkled with powdered sugar and were served with a whipped European butter that was excellent as well. Furthermore, they reminded me more of a fritter than a traditional hush puppy.
We ordered the Hot Crab Dip. This comes with crab smothered in cheese, diced Roma tomatoes, served with toasted sourdough. The bread is toasted to a nice golden brown, but the pieces are laid on top of each other, so not all the bread was toasted. The dip was cheesy and buttery, the crab was fresh and slightly sweet and just melted in your mouth. There was a slight heat bite on the tongue at the end. The tomatoes seemed like an afterthought and didn't help the dish.
I tried their She Crab Soup. The soup was smooth, creamy and buttery. The crab was cooked wonderful, light flaky and slightly sweet. However, there was a slight sour note on the finish that kinda took away from the soup.
For my entrée I had the special of the day, Red Snapper with asparagus and a loaded baked potato. This was made with blackened snapper, chilled crab meat, diced tomatoes and a warm citrus hollandaise. The fish was light, flaky and well seasoned. The hollandaise was light in flavor but prepared well. The cold crab and tomatoes offered a weird contrast to the dish. It also chilled the sauce. The tomatoes again seemed out of place. The fish was good enough to stand on its own. The potato and asparagus were cooked perfectly.
My fiancé ordered Broiled Special of Scallops and Shrimp soaked in a garlic, butter, chardonnay sauce with a Crab Cake and fries. This dish was fantastic. The scallops were fresh and slightly sweet, the shrimp was cooked perfectly. The crab cake was moist, with the perfect amount of breading and a nice pepper finish. The fries were out of a bag but cooked well.
Miller's offers a full bar along with a surf or turf menu. The staff is very pleasant. The Fat Man says that Miller's Seafood & Steak House is Fat Man Approved...
Read moreHad dinner here this week. What a wonderful experience! Great food, great service, great atmosphere! I got there a bit early, prior to the dinner rush, around 5pm. I hadn't eaten all day, so I was famished. A steakhouse that serves local seafood AND sushi?! Yes!! Take my money!
The hostesses and my waiter greeted me with a smile, a positive attitude, and a basket of the most delicious hush puppies I've ever eaten! Lightly dusted with powered sugar, they tasted almost like a carnival funnel cake!
Had the bacon wrapped scallops and a hangover sushi roll as appetizers. The sushi was almost too pretty to eat! The edible orchid was a very nice touch as well. Both were fantastically flavorful and made with LOCAL fresh seafood. The local and fresh part were extremely important to me. I love supporting the local economy, so I felt by dining at Miller's, it was a win-win.
For my entree, I chose surf and turf. The surf was local caught shrimp, the turf was a very flavorful angus NY strip! I prefer mine medium, and it was cooked to perfection. The sides were baked zucchini and garlic red skinned mashed potatoes. Delicious!
My only suggestion would be to have a wider selection of draught and bottled beers. They happened to have a great bottled Railhouse Oatmeal Stout from Aberdeen, NC (veteran owned and operated), which is a favorite of mine, but for others who prefer a wider selection of craft beer or something lighter, Miller's could use a few more selections. The wine list, was also not very long. I considered a cabernet, but the one I wanted, they only sold by the bottle. Don't think I didn't consider it though 😁
Overall, I would absolutely eat there, and will eat there again! While my bill was around $100, i did have 2 appetizers, 2 beers, and a surf and turf entree. So the prices were fairly reasonable as well.
Thank you Miller's for a wonderful meal and experience!! 5 stars.
And don't just take my word for it, you can ask the dozens of people waiting for a table by the time I finished around 615p. No doubt this is a GREAT spot for...
