$1 Sushi in Chicago? This New Restaurant Is Blowing Up With Flavor
Magmnus SaundersMagmnus Saunders
I ordered 12 rice balls, 1 lucky sushi bag, 1 sushi boat, and 1 drink. I got all of this for just under $24 including tax. Each rice ball was $1.00, each lucky bag and sushi boat was $1.99, and my drink was $3.99. I went on a Saturday around 5:45. They were out of all flavors of rice triangle and skewers, and a few milk tea flavors. 8 rice balls was more than enough for me for one sitting since they have so much rice in each one, and I had to finish my review later when I could eat the other 6 food items. The average person can expect to eat 6-10 food items. For the drink, I ordered the rose blossom lemonade, with 25% sugar. I don’t know if they stuck to 25%, because it was very sweet. If mine was 25%, then I would recommend not going any higher than that. The rose blossom flavor was a good strength though. Most rose lemonades I’ve tried, the lemonade overpowers the rose. This one however, has enough rose flavor. The lemonade flavor and the rose flavor were well balanced. 5/5 The first and best rice ball I tried was the pickled cucumber rice ball. I would highly recommend it. The seasoning was good and not too weak, so it was quite enjoyable. 5/5 The other rice balls I rated 5/5 include the Snapper and the Smoked Salmon. Both of these were flavorful. I could taste the fish, and there were other flavors there too from seasoning. The rice balls I rated 4/5 include the tuna, white tuna, and fish egg. These were nothing special, they just tasted like rice. Not enough topping. I also rated the avocado rice ball a 4/5 because it’s okay, but nothing special. The other rice ball I rated a 4/5 is the crab stick rice ball, since the wasabi flavor was too strong and was the dominating flavor. I couldn’t taste the crab stick or the rice. These were all fine food, but I wouldn’t order them again. The rice ball I give a rating of 3/5 is the shrimp rice ball. The shrimp was overcooked and therefore tough and flavorless. It was not a good bite. Would not order again and would caution others against ordering. The rice ball I give a 2/5 rating to is the salmon rice ball. It was mostly rice flavor, but a fishy scent and aftertaste. I felt the texture or some stringy bits of fat in the fish. Also as soon as the fish hit my stomach I felt uncomfortable, like it wasn’t the highest quality fish. Would not order again, and would recommend that no one orders it unless they improve the fish quality. I got two fruit rice balls. One mango and one strawberry. They are aimed more towards a dessert course, as they have frosting sauce and sprinkles on top. This sauce isn’t very sweet, so you don’t have to avoid it if you’re someone who dislikes frosting. The toppings don’t add much flavor, only visuals. The dominant flavor in these rice balls was the fruit, which was soft and ripe. 5/5 The lucky sushi bag wasn’t great. I got the shrimp tempura flavor. If you wanted tempura, it’s pretty good, although a very small amount of shrimp. But the bag itself is quite oily and mushy, and the rice is not flavorful. For the price, it’s not worth it at all. 3/5 I also tried a gunkan sushi boat. The topping was metallic tasting. I’m not sure what the topping was since the item was just called “gunkan sushi boat”, but it was sort of a spicy vegetable mixture. Tasted like instant kimchi. If they had better options for filling/topping for the sushi boats, then they might be worth the price. I wouldn’t recommend the flavor I tried. 3/5 Rose Blossom Lemonade - 5/5 Pickled Cucumber Rice Ball - 5/5 Snapper Rice Ball - 5/5 Smoked Salmon Rice Ball - 5/5 Strawberry Rice Ball - 5/5 Mango Rice Ball - 5/5 Tuna Rice Ball - 4/5 White Tuna Rice Ball - 4/5 Fish Egg Rice Ball - 4/5 Avocado Rice Ball - 4/5 Crab Stick Rice Ball - 4/5 Shrimp Rice Ball - 3/5 Shrimp Tempura Lucky Sushi Bag - 3/5 Gunkan Sushi Boat - 3/5 Salmon Rice Ball 2/5 Overall, 4/5 rating

Balls are basically all rice with small slivers of fish on it. Saw on TikTok so I thought I would stop by (balls looked a lot better online because the influencer was probably paid and it was made better for online). All the balls break in half or fall apart (they put soy sauce in the middle of the ball) so you’re pretty much just making a mess and eating with your hands since all they provide you with is a double pronged toothpick. No soy sauce or napkins. For how much you end up spending it’s not satisfying and money better spent at an ayce or something. Great for kids or for people who want to try sushi but are afraid of raw fish.

The concept of $1 sushi ball is so amazing and cheap, but it's pretty obvious they are still in the beginning stages of opening which meant the service lacked a bit.

I went Wednesday night and waited almost 2 hours for an order of 7 sushi balls. Our drinks came out within 10 minutes of ordering though and both of the lemonades were really tasty. We even had a problem where our receipt didn't print both of the drinks we ordered and they immediately made the other one. We actually were one of the last groups allowed to order as they were so busy they stopped taking new orders around 8:30.

As for the sushi, it's a mostly rice, but what can you really expect for $1. The fish was really fresh, I tried the salmon, shrimp, and octopus. The person I came with was vegetarian, so few options for him, but it was still a good quick bite.

Obviously waiting 2 hours for what's supposed to be a quick meal isn't ideal, but it was clear there were only 2 people working, 1 making drinks and 1 making sushi, the guy in the front was really nice and was giving out stickers and eventually since people left their orders behind he began to offer free sushi balls to the little of us left too. The guy making sushi in the back was even coming out and checking on the few people eating inside making sure they liked their food.

It's clear their heart is there, they just need more workers, or my advice is since it's already a small storefront, turn into online ordering/pickup only with a wait time, so people know when to show up and won't be...

My older sister has been wanting to go here ever since seeing TikTok/Instagram Reels over hyping the $1 Sushi Balls. We checked to see if they had a website (which they do) to place an order ahead of time (we were heading to Montrose Beach). We stopped by initially thinking that our order would be ready soon (we didn't receive any text verification until after we stopped by initially), but our order wasn't ready.

After leaving the establishment, we got a text verifying that our order would be ready over an hour... So much for the added convenience fee. We figured we could go ahead with our plans and come back around when our order was ready.

About 30 minutes have passed and we were almost at the beach (there was a lot of traffic) when we received another confirmation text stating our order was ready. Confused, we called to verify if our order was ready before going back since the initial text with our pickup time was incorrect. The person on the phone was quite rude, explained how their system was all automatic, and the text that we received is correct. We ended up driving back and picking up our order.

Presentation (product packaging) was nice, but some of the contents of the Sushi Ball were spilling from the bottom/sides of the actual packaging (make sure you have napkins or some type of sanitizer to keep your hands clean). Overall, they were okay at best. Definitely over hyped.

The website should be more transparent with estimated order...
