While I was excited to see this chain open a location near me I think some of the magic is lost. The food was fine but this is a tough area for burgers, places like Budacki's, Quick Bites, Lucy's, Slim's, The Bad Apple, and my personal favorite burger Byron's all have great food and lower prices. Currently I don't think there is a reason for me to go back to Small Cheval.
This isn't because it was bad my any means but rather it's just average. The food tasted very commercial and there wasn't any aspect of it that made me stop to savor every bite. Plus this joint is rather expensive. I only purchased a single cheese deluxe and that was around $11. Byron's on a Wednesday gets you a huge double cheese (with anything you want on it), an order of fries, and a refillable drink for $13. And let me tell you that burger is way better than this.
Cheval promotes an image of an 'upscaled' savory burger but honestly at this location at least, it does not deliver. Other fast casual joints are doing it better. I had no issues with the staff or timing of my order so please don't let this review paint a poor image of the staff. My complaints lie with the executives who control the...
Read moreFirst visit to the new Lincoln Square location, and it won't be my last. I've visited a few other locations, and the food remains consistent here. My fiancé and I walked in and saw full window seating and 15 or so people standing in a loose queue waiting for their orders. The kitchen was cranking as they were able to fulfill orders and get the waiting customers out in a reasonable time, considering how busy it was. Staff offered root beer to waiting customers. We ordered 2 cheeseburgers, 1 fry, and 2 draft root beers. Everything was delicious and, again, timely. We had just snagged a few seats, so we could enjoy our food there. Afterward, we had a 20-minute walk ahead, so we decided on two milkshakes to go. Both salted caramel and cookies & cream were delicious. 5 stars for food and service, 4 stars for the atmosphere, and simply for customers left in a bit of a wandering place while waiting. Welcome to the area,...
Read moreThis was my first time having Small Cheval. I got a double cheeseburger which was delightful. I thought it was well cooked and had a good flavor. I also ordered a side of fries which were crisp and hot and paired well with the garlic aioli I was offered. My only complaint about the food is that the garlic aioli cups are not larger because that was my favorite part of the meal. The vanilla shake I ordered was rich and creamy. The service was great. The food was good. However, the seating in this place is incredibly limited. The restaurant was very busy and only has maybe 10 seats and a small standing bar. I think there’s enough space to create some more seating options for dine in customers, but I’m no interior designer or business owner. Overall, I enjoyed my food but wished there were more places to sit as we walked 25 minutes to get there and didn’t want our food to get cold on...
