I arrived in Chicago running on a mere 3 hours of sleep and a mission: to find coffee that was both good and strong. Something to jolt me awake while still feeling like a cozy, sweet treat. Not exactly an easy order, but the barista at Fancy Plants handled it like a personal hero. I asked for the most caffeinated, sweet latte-like drink possible, admitting I had no clue how to achieve such a contradiction. Without missing a beat, she tippity-typed into the screen and asked if I wanted to know what she was going to make. I said no, I was feeling bold, and watching her and her colleague work with such speed and grace during very busy business hours and a full store gave me full trust in the surprise. While my mystery drink was being crafted, I took a quick trip to the restroom, super clean, by the way, and shortly after, the drink appeared. It was exactly what I needed. A quad-shot espresso creation that kept me wired through the concert I’d traveled from Texas to attend. The cup itself was warm in my hands as I strolled through the beautiful, brisk Chicago streets, a bit colder than what I’m used to back home. I don’t know what that drink was, I’m sure it wasn’t on the menu, but I’ll remember it. I’ll definitely return if I’m ever in Chicago again. Fancy Plants, thank you for the caffeine, the warmth, and the touch of magic.

What an absolutely fantastic cafe. We will for sure be stopping here again whenever we go through Chicago. The coffee is excellent, and the food is really amazing. We were helped today by Jamie, who was friendly and helpful with a bright and bubbly personality. She works on the café's fantastic rotating selection of vegan sweets, which are all made entirely from scratch and in house. It can be hard to find yeasted vegan donuts from scratch, but we are looking forward to trying them here when we are next here on a weekend. I had the carrot lox bagel, which is my first "fully loaded" vegan lox bagel: cucumber, greens, tomato, red onion, capers, and lemon juice. Every detail was perfect - the everything bagel was toasted to a crispy outside and chewy middle and topped with thick and creamy tofu cream cheese; the vegetables were fresh and vibrant; and the carrot lox was delicately textured and mouthwateringly smoky and salty. I tasted also my husband's order of quiche, which was creamy, hearty, and intensely flavorful. It was served also with a fresh salad. We tasted their sample of peach muffin and found it to be delicious, moist and light. We also purchased one of their lovely homemade poptarts. I highly recommend this café to vegans and non-vegans alike.

The ambiance and food was below sub par. For a place calling itself fancy plants (which I'm assuming is homage to its vegan menu) there were no plants for their outdoor seating; just empty plant holders. Granted it's Chicago weather there are Spring plants that bloom which would've made the scenery much better for this little place. The cupcake seemed a bit backwards because the cupcake had too delicate of a crumb (the way a pastry is on the inside) and fell apart during the unraveling of the liner. I was excited to try this vegan cupcake. The frosting had a consistency the cupcake was supposed to and was quite firm. The burrito was cold which was quickly fixed by another heating thanks to the attentive staff. My salad felt like a baby's salad just due to me being able to count the number of leaves in it. The salsa was on point though and fiery which was a good thing although it didn't help heat my burrito😔. Would I come back here? Maybe in the summer when there are plants and hopefully they adjusted their cupcake recipe by then as well.

We ordered their 5-course French dinner for delivery and I can’t say enough about how impressive and delightful the experience was. First, ordering online was easy and VERY FAIRLY PRICED! The delivery was seamless and they included thorough reheating instructions for each dish. Each dish was wrapped beautifully and carefully, as well. Second, preparation was easy and Kevin included some opportunities to improvise his cooking which was fun. He also included a challenge to plate the food beautifully and we accepted that challenge and had so much fun taking pictures and trying to be fancy. Third, the food was divine. The mushroom pate with nut&seed bread was a perfect start and quite filling for a first course which was great because we were hungry. The extra truffles shaved on top added a potency to the base of the pate that was perfect. The French onion soup was so classic and rich. The cheese was perfect and it was fun to try frying it up in a pan and then adding to the soup. The salad with green beans, pear onions, and bacon vinaigrette was a treat. I’ve never had a salad like that before and the flavors worked perfectly. The main course was also a treat. As vegans we rarely eat French food because it is typically so hard to replace the butter/eggs and rich creams/cheeses but this roulade was special. It was so fun to eat and the textures were unlike anything because the root veggies were cooked but still crisp. That beet sauce was AMAZING! They gave us more than we could plate so we put the rest on the side and ended up using it as a dip for the last few pieces of bread as well. I could swim in that beet sauce. Overall two thumbs up and we will be ordering again.

One final note, this was a dinner on the day that we were supposed to be getting married but had to reschedule due to Covid. This dinner made us feel special on a day that was supposed to be...
