Went here because I was doing business nearby and wanted to get something quick to eat. Service was anything but quick or commendable. I asked for drinks that took too long to make, and were served lukewarm. They didn’t have the original drink I asked for, which was fine, but when I ordered the dish I wanted, they said they didn’t have rice. At that point I was kind of annoyed. Rice is a Mexican staple. If you don’t have rice, which is a very basic staple, what are you doing? On top of this the waitress was very standoffish when taking our order and didn’t offer so much as a smile or any hospitality when interacting with us. Overall, I paid $45+ tip which was a little steep given the service and amount of food (which wasn’t a lot, 2 drinks, a burrito and enchiladas. I would’ve paid the same ordering delivery from someplace else). I wanted to like this hole-in-the-wall place, but I don’t see...
Read moreI'm not sure who Doña Chio (Mrs. Chio) is, but I think she's a saint! The beauty of this restaurant is the simplicity of the food and the amazing taste. Nothing complicated or experimental, no room to be pretentious here. Well, actually there is not much room, is a tiny cozy place that needs to expand soon. The food is great, large portions, great carne asada, hand made tortillas and super friendly service. It's what you'd expect from a local eatery in Mexico City. My favorite antojitos are, of course, tacos, sopes and huaraches. They serve pozole on weekends and I'm planning to try it soon. I brought my German friend along and boy he loves the food, he is a professional chef and can attest to the fact that chefs eat here. I recommend it to anybody and I'm coming back...
Read moreA clean, well-run, quite small place with amazing Northern Mexican food as well as their titular huaraches. I haven't seen huaraches elsewhere in Edgewater/Rogers Park, they're like a flatbread pizza but with traditional Mexican ingredients like masa dough, refried beans, nopalitos, meat, cheese, etc. I lived in New Mexico before and everything I've tried at Huaraches Doña Chio tastes like "home" to me - very traditional, salty, limey, stick-to-your-ribs Mexican, a lot of it inspired by Northern Mexican flavors. My favorite dish is their chorizo y papas (potato) burrito which is very flavorful (unlike some potato dishes, if you've found them bland you won't with these!), and they have good...
