Big portions, reasonable prices -- and very tasty!! Love their bacon kimchee fried rice and the famous Akutagawa. Jacob the chef/owner and Jaeb our server work very hard to be welcoming and efficient.
My father Tom was the owner/chef ages ago (1960s-1984) when it was the tiny Hamburger King on the triangle corner across the street. Along with a partner named Chester, he expanded it to its current location, always with a Japanese-Asian twist on American standards. You could always get rice instead of potatoes and find soy sauce (shoyū) on the tables. Unfortunately, Chester turned out to be a tax-evading alcoholic, which landed the restaurant in trouble. It broke our father's spirit. So after he retired, Hamburger King went through a succession of owners.
With Jacob's arrival, now you can get Korean flavors as well -- and it is all delicious at Rice'n Bread. This is a great neighborhood diner, and our families still drive in an hour from the suburbs to eat here once a month. Just wish Jacob would correct the background information on his menu to give our father the credit he deserves. He built up the restaurant; Chester almost...
Read moreAbsolutely lovely and friendly staff. This was my first time dining in, as I have always done takeout! I would enjoy coming back to sit inside this cozy restaurant.
We ordered the beef bulgogi, buldak and pa-jeon. The bulgogi came with a refreshing side of pickled pear, jalapeño and cucumber and Kim chi.
The pa-jeon was crispy and flavorful, with shrimp and octopus that was absolutely fresh and delicious. It came sort of broken up and perfect for dipping in the sauce.
The fried chicken (I’ve had both the buldak and dandak) are very solid menu choices that anyone would be thrilled with and come with rice and a little side of cabbage. Great flavor and sauce, the chicken is moist on the inside and has never been dried out.
The beef bulgogi also had great flavor and came with rice. Really enjoyable and cozy dish that anyone would like!
Again staff were friendly and attentive. Great for a quick bite, absolutely perfect takeout and well priced for the amount of food! We ended up taking our leftovers to go, and in all for 2 people spent about $50 for what is going to turn into 2...
Read moreSome of the best Korean I've ever had. The Tteok-bokki was stellar. Spicy, savory, and the rice cake stayed tender even as the dish cooled throughout our meal. The sauce was so delicious I had to take the remainder to go so I could mix it with some rice later at home. Bibimbap was masterfully done with a great balance of flavors and such a tasty chili sauce on the pork. The fried chicken was fresh, crispy, and served in a generous portion. The bulgogi bowl was classic comfort food. Can't be beat. The house kimchi is smoky and a bit more mild than most. Great kimchi to try for the first time. The American breakfast fare on offer is also nicely done - all our eggs were perfectly cooked and the pancakes were delicious. The service was excellent. We came with a group that included a couple small children and were accommodated well and given such kind and friendly attention by the owner, who even came out to chat with us for a bit as we left. Very genuine personal touch. Will absolutely visit again anytime I'm in Wrigleyville. What an absolute gem...
