Lalo's Sonora Style Dogs — Restaurant in Las Cruces

Growing up in Tucson where Sonoran style dogs are everywhere, I’m a Sonoran style hot dog fanatic. After moving to the area recently, I of course was looking to find my fix of Sonoran style dogs. I did a quick google search and this is one of the only places that showed up. So I plugged it in to my GPS last night and drove the hour from home to check it out.

It was a little hard to find especially in the dark (I passed it 3 different times) but boy was it WORTH it! This IS THE PLACE! My husband and I had just walked up and were standing there staring at the menu, when the guy running the stand came out and greeted us with a huge smile and explained the menu.

As is my typical style when trying a new place to eat, I ALWAYS start with something I’m familiar with so I can judge how much I like it and if I’m willing to come back. I ordered 3 Sonoran style dogs and 2 cokes.

It was by and far the best Sonoran style dog I’ve ever had. The buns were the super fresh and the best I’ve had (potato brioche?) the hot ingredients were hot and cooked to perfection, the cold ingredients were ice cold and fresh, and the sauces lovely. The guy was super friendly and even comped us probably the best fries (perfectly spiced) I’ve ever had and at the end brought us out some cinnamon and sugar dusted fresh cooked tortilla chips.

My wife and I are road tripping through some states right now and as we got close to Las Cruces I did a quick search for something to eat. Lalo's came up and I immediately said Bingo. It really was a Bingo. Nice little food truck and drink truck outside. Picnic tables outdoors in the warm new mexico sun. We walked up kind of unsure what was what, and Lalo jumped right out of his food truck to greet us and get us oriented. Just one of those guys who are the nicest people you'll meet. His menu is awesome and simple. Sonora dogs, which are hot dogs wrapped in bacon. Decent fluffy buns. Different toppings and such based on the type of dog. He's got burgers, tacos and dirty fries as well. We got the asada fries, and two different dogs. Obviously, it's gut-heavy food. Keeping that in mind, it's so very good. It was fresh and hot tasting and very flavorful. Lalo took great care of us the whole way through and we had some nice conversation for a good while before getting back on the trail. Fair pricing too. Oh and he had a Pistachio Agua Fresca!!! So darn good. With pistachios from New Mexico. Tasted like pistachio Horchata. Also nearby is White Sands National Park, which is a must see, so if you are going to that Nat'l Park from Southern Cali or Arizona, you'll go through Las Cruces. Stop at Lalo's before you hit the dunes. 10/10...

Ya’ll, I was too fast and too furious with this one. I gobbled first and asked questions later. Readers, you may ask, “was it good? But Ale, was it worth it?” The answer is yes. Quest no more however for I have a vague but fleeting memory of it. We were late on the road to ABQ, and for some reason, we were craving hot dogs… again. Listen, our family can crave a dog like nobody’s business (is it a Mexican/ chihuahua thing? Is it in our genes? Feel free to comment cause we crave hot dogs and eat sausage about once a week). Google pointed us in the direction of Lalo’s Sonora Style Dogs in Las Cruces with the promise of primo dogs and patio chillness, so we had to stop by. We do believe we met THE Lalo, and his customer service was on point. So was the food and so were the aguas frescas. We had the Sonora dogs (8/10) and the Elote/Asadero fries (10/10) and an agua de coco and de piña (both 10/10). Be advised, the bread is not your standard hot dog bun, don’t say I didn’t warn you, it’s different, but good. Food came out quick, it went down the gullet quick and I wish I had more to say about that but all I felt at the end was a full belly and a happy feeling....
