Sylas and Maddy's Homemade Ice Cream is THE classic ice cream parlor in Lawrence, KS.
This place is always busy. There are so many local organizations that use Sylas and Maddy's as a site for fundraisers and other get-togethers, you can really tell this business is loved by the community.
Their ice cream is so thick, rich, and creamy. My favorite flavors are the Queen of Hearts and Yellow Brickle Road, two double-scoops in a waffle bowl.
Anyone coming to visit a college student should make a point to stop by Sylas and Maddy's. Their ice cream is easy to take with you down Mass Street, though most shops would rather you not. Most of the bars are fine with you bringing ice cream in!
The Japanese Friendship Garden is practically across the street and in the summer it is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a scoop or two with someone close to you.
Whenever I have a sweet tooth, I go to Sylas and Maddy's. I have for more than a decade and I don't see myself stopping any time soon. It's the kind of place I'll want to take my kids once they exist and are old enough to enjoy ice cream. Luckily, that's...
Read moreI am completely shocked at how Ill informed and unwilling the staff is at helping with a common allergy question. My son is allergic to dairy and nuts and I know as this is an ice cream shop they may not have any options for him, however when I asked they told me the sorbet is dairy free… I asked if it was also nut free since it can be commonly made with almond or soy. They had no idea. Not only did they have no idea they had no allergen book or ingredients to check. As I was checking out and mentioned I would have loved to also purchase my son a cup the cashier mentioned she could call someone later on to find out if there was in fact soy or almond in the sorbet. I waited to be the only customer at the counter to ask my questions. So the fact that they could have called someone to find out and we’re so unbothered was really inconsiderate. This can be done better. The fact that someone has to miss out because somebody couldn’t simply check ingredients is really...
Read moreNot the first time visiting Sylas and Maddy's. Always a wait due to a line of ice cream aficionados. The list of uncommon names of flavors can seem overwhelming but due to the line, you have a few minutes to figure out your choice. The staff are a great mix of patience to help you make your decision, then quickness to fill your order. The place is clean and just the right amount of light. The art on the wall provides interesting interpretations of the different flavors. I prefer the blueberry cheesecake, but the toasted coconut was pretty good. You also have various classics available as well. So, if you're in the mood for something tried and true, or feeling a bit adventurous, Sylas and Maddy's has ice cream for almost everyone. One note: if you have food allergies then this is probably not the place for you. The scoops are reused so the ice creams can cross contaminate, if you want to call it that. They make this clear with signage at the front of...
