Not a great experience at Weller's. First we were there with a bigger group, 8 I think. They refused to seat us until everyone was there, even though we were only missing 2 people and they had to move chairs around to fit us anyway. Ok fine I guess but there is almost nowhere to wait. They wouldn't let us sit at the bar either. They kept telling us "we have to keep it open in case a customer wants it", and I thought, well, I AM a freaking customer. Ok fine whatever. Once we got get seated the service was slow. We waited to place our order and had to ask a few times about our meal, not enough to make us walk out but enough to be irritating. No one was straight up rude or anything, but it was as if they were waiting on a more important customer or something, that's how they made us feel. Now, the food. It just straight up wasn't good. We lived in Germany so we were excited to try some of our favorites, and everything was disappointing. All of the meat items were dry and tough, with the exception of the wurst. The sausages were fine, but they weren't any better than like Johnsonville brats, really. The rouladen was very dry and tough and lacked flavor, no pickle or mustard inside, very bland. Made me think of leather really. The "German" potato salad was basically no better than Walmart plain potato salad but they added chopped apples, I guess that was supposed to be the "German" part. Otherwise bland and flavorless. The schnitzel was crispy but lacked seasoning and was also dry. The jaegersoße was the best part of the whole meal for everyone, it tasted nice and had big chunks of mushroom in it and was creamy. A bowl of that eaten like soup would have been a better meal, frankly. The biggest disappointment for my was the rotkohl. It tasted washed out and bland, was mushy, with almost no texture and literally zero sweet OR sour flavor at all, like a good rotkohl should have. I cannot express how disappointed we were in the entire experience. I didn't want to give 1 star partly because people tend to just brush off 1 star reviews, and the waitress was nice and attentive. But everything else was 1 star at best. Too bad, we had just moved back to the state after 7 or 8 years in California, and I was hopeful for a place for a nice German meal from time to time. Guess we will have to...
Read moreI’ll start off by saying that we were really excited to try Weller’s for the first time, as everyone recommends them on Reddit and Facebook as some of the best German food in all of Utah. We just so happened to be in the Layton area for something else and took the opportunity to get a to-go order so we could finally be a part of their fan club. Unfortunately, after having to go inside 3 separate times and wasting 20+ minutes trying to figure out why the side dish we ordered wasn’t correct on two separate tries, we were quite turned off by the whole experience. The pricing discrepancy issue and incorrect item would’ve also been more readily apparent upon pick-up had the receipt actually been itemized.
The German Pizza’s flavors were great, but probably would’ve been even better if it hadn’t have cooled to room temp by the time we actually got to eat it.
I understand having new staff, but I explicitly stated I wanted the potato salad (with mayo, apples, peas, etc), but we were given some kind of lettuce salad with apples, who knows what cheese, an interesting vinegrette, and tomatoes (which I’m allergic to); the lettuce salad we were given wasn’t on any of the menus I looked at for either location. Then, we were given a hot potato salad of some kind— also not correct based on their online menu’s description. When a chef finally came out to see what was going on, he informed us that the potato salad we wanted wasn’t a part of their current menu and they had switched to a winter menu. One would think that during a menu update that they’d update all versions of the menu, especially online. Clearly they had most of the ingredients to make this “summer” potato salad, but we ultimately left without a side, and a lot of wasted time.
Really bummed that we didn’t get the kind of experience that others rave about, and they could’ve saved everyone involved a lot of time and food waste had they simply trained staff better and had updated menus online (the Ogden menu is still on the “summer” menu as well). Honestly don’t think the pizza is worth another hour-long drive to try them again; it was good, but not...
Read more#WellersBistro an excellent place for German Food. Here’s an experience I had on my first visit. Saw an article on a German place in Layton so had to go with my friend who lived in Germany for a couple years. I enjoy German food and I’m down to eat food that is part of my ancestry memory. Weller’s Bistro definitely filled the desire. We didn’t want to wait for a table so sat at the bar, which had many advantages. We were able to chat with the bar tender and ask questions about the food, also, it gave us a direct look into the kitchen and the service window, we saw many things come out that interested us that we tried including the house made #Pretzel served with #beerCheese sauce, #wholeGrainMustard and house made #pickles Mmmm. For my Entree I of course had to have my #Rotkohl (purple cabbage and apple) sauté and braised to yummy goodness. Sauté cabbage is a staple in my family but we usually do green and don’t use the patience needed for yummy Rotkohl, so I take advantage when I see it on the menu. This was excellent Rotkohl. My Entree also came with #DasSchnitzel Parmesan Crusted Pork Loin pounded flat, with Lemon Caper Beurre Blanc (sauce) that was lovely. I tried the more traditional #Jägersoße mushroom sauce from my friends Schnitzel and was glad I went with the Butter Lemon Caper sauce as it had a wonderful bright flavor and butter! My dish also came with #Bratkartoffeln roasted potatoes, onion, and Speck (Bacon) which was fine but was lost when placed next to the other yumminess found on my plate. We decided to end the meal with #Bienenstich (Bee Sting Cake) a double layer yeast cake with cream filling and a honey almond top crust. The trick to enjoying the dessert is to flip it over so the crust is on the bottom, so when your utensil goes into it your cream layer doesn’t squirt out and you get a bit of the crusty gooey honey almond topping with each bite. All the food was excellent but I’d go there just for...
