Made a reservation for a special ocassion, my boyfriends birthday a week in advance. I provided dessert details which was for the special occasion and nothing else in particular. The reservation was today at 7:30 pm. Of course we cordially arrived early. When we arrived at 7:15 they sat down two tables whom had reservations at 7:45. Shame since it was just my boyfriend and i, meanwhile two groups of people were seated. On a Friday night, if you are looking for a nice upscale steakhouse you need reservations ahead in this area. So we waited to cut our losses. At this point, we were a bit disappointed. We were seated after waiting a while. We were seated, we knew what we wanted as we had planned ahead. They never showed us the meat and we noticed they showed all the other tables the steak cart. We were disappointed. Honestly it felt like they only cater to larger parties, as if it’s not a place for a couples dinner. We had been looking forward to this dinner for over a week, we chose Rare because of the “great reviews”. Unfortunately our experience was the opposite. Actually during our experience there, we were rushed. I believe they wanted to turn tables as fast as they could since they had a lot of foot traffic. Our food was in and out. Even our waiter said if we ordered an appetizer, we will have to wait for dinner. We didn’t, i just think he was trying to rush us. After waiting a while after dinner, heserved his dessert which was pretty much store bought and nothing special. We ordered drinks, Appetizers, porterhouse for 2, sides and dessert. Not a cheap bill, but we were extremely disappointed. We left a 10% tip as the experience was far less than what we expected. Never have we done that, but honestly our time there wasn’t valuable. As we waited for our valet car, the waiter chased us down. He came out the back kitchen door to make sure the “TIP” was correct! What on earth?! We were baffled. I had to say tonight was a failure, i wish we went to Morton’s. Needless to say, we will never return. You are better off going to Outback for an average steak. I Hope the manager finds a way to cater to all clientele. Ancouple looking for a decent dinner deserves a nice time, I’ll be going to...
Read moreA well maintained restaurant with an upbeat signage. Parking is a premium, and they reserve the actual parking area for valet only, even on empty nights, one must park down the street, even the handicap parking is reserved for the valet. A beautiful interior where you first enter the bar area and walk through to the main seating area greets you as you enter the front door. The Host was very quick, helpful and pleasant as were the entire staff. The menu was very diversified, but overly priced for the given fare compared to either Arthurs, or Steve's Sizzling Steaks which are close to half the price, and the portion sizes were mediocre at best in comparison. I ordered the 14oz Prime which came with corn and string beans. We received some bread and dips for the three of us. There was 1 pretzel stick and 2 slices of warm brown bread with 2 small serving cups with butter and a dip. We also received 3 pieces of bread wafers with bruschetta on them that was slightly frozen and soggy. We ordered drinks, which were quickly filled and upon delivery of our dinner I received a very nice looking steak with a garnishing of 6 small string beans, and a tiny 1 inch cut off an ear of corn, both enough for a mouthful. The steak was cooked perfectly, as were the veggies. Unfortunately the cut of this particular steak was tough, with plenty of hard grizzle to chew through, and lots of bone that one need to pick out of the teeth. Even though I had to leave a third of the steak as too hard to cut or chew, the flavor was very, very good! My companions both had the Filet Mignon and while one was satisfied overall, the other said they too were disappointed. The atmosphere was very relaxing when we first arrived as there were only 5 other tables of 2-4 people. By the time we ordered only one other group had come in, but the place became an echo chamber once the new group raised their voices, prompting everyone else to do so. One had difficultly NOT hearing the conversation from across the room, and NOT being able to hear the person sitting in front of you. The layout is much like a VFW Hall or American Foreign Legion with a room for the bar with a couple wall tables and then one large room...
Read moreMy name is Ernest P. and I ate at rare steak house today (august 2) aka my girlfriends birthday (a special day obviously). When we arrived things started out well although it was a little bit dead (a small give away of what was in store). Initially our waiter did a decent job taking care of us. However after our initial order was taken he stopped coming to the table to check on us. Other waiters bought over our appetizer, drinks and entres. Eventually our steaks ($40 ny strip and $47 Cowboy steak, which the waiter touted as the best thing on the menu) came out of the kitchen. The birthday girl ordered medium well and I ordered medium. Let's just there was nothing rare about my steak. In fact my $47 dollar steak was a piece of leather. My girlfriends steak still mooing. The waiter said he'd be back in a minute to check on us. However he never showed up and 15 minutes went by. By the time I asked for another waiter to come over my steak was cold and my girlfriend was half way done. The other waiter apologized and grabbed the owner/manager. He said I'm sorry and offered to buy me a $15 dollar old fashioned (dark liquor should be stirred, it wasn't). I said sure. Then time went by the waiter finally came and said sorry. Eventually I stopped eating. Of the 26 Oz I ate maybe 6. I gave it to the buser saying it was not edible. I asked for the check and the waiter bough over literally a bowl of whipped cream in an attempt to slip me an olive branch. I said thanks then he dropped the check. I opened it and there was nothing in the check book. I felt like a jerk as I thought they actually tried to make it up to me. I was ready to leave a $50 tip. I asked the waiter and he literally said oupppps I dropped the check. That did it for me. I paid my $142.31 bill and even still left a $20 for the horrific service (20 as I did not tip for my steak). This is not just an angry person on a rant. I happen to work at 4 diamond restaurant in West Orange for the past 3 years and understand quality service. Let's just say the only "Rare" thing about Rare steak house would be ever seeing me there again. Birthday ruined. (Sorry if anything is misspelled and or if there is anything with poor...
