Be warned... This is an American beer garden doing an impression of a German Bier Garten. Although the beer variety is amazing (and delicious), those of us who went for the food were roundly disappointed. The good were the pretzels and fries. However I doubt seriously the fries were fried in duck fat as advertised. For the bad... All the food was done by people who were cooking like they think the Germans do it. Wrong! Brats can never be served luke warm and allowed to cool off and become dry. And where was the brotchen bread or at least bratwurst bread. Hotdog buns don't cut it no matter how good they are. And only one mustard? A bland version of deutsch sempf? Come on. Give a guy a choice with a good beat like the 'Hunter'. Okay, so, Red cabbage has got to be simmered for hours with seasoning and vinegar... Not mostly raw and between cold and nuked. Spaetzel is flavorful... This stuff was suppose to be sweet potatoes, I couldn't tell since it was flavorless. Plus, parmesean cheese? On both? Germans don't use parmesean except in an Italian restaurant owned and run by Italians. The bierstube chicken wasn't bierstube. It wasn't even decent rotisserie. It was dry, bland and the skin wasn't even crispy. How does one purposefully make tasteless chicken? My snitzel had been pounded so thin and then left in the deep fryer too long. The edges were crispy hard. The triple mushroom sauce/gravy congealed halfway through eating it. The Brussel sprouts salad was seasoned well... But the sprouts have to be cooked completely before putting them in the "salad". Mine were so hard they felt like they'd come out of the fridge and nooked slightly then thrown in. However, I will brag about the pork rinds. (not German) They were dead on with the flavor and seasoning. The atmosphere is perfect for young people hanging out, but the bad food put the damper on this group who has lived in Germany for many years and was looking forward to a decent snitzel and brat. I gave the place 2 stars because the beer and choices...
Read moreIt’s a nice, spacious German beer hall. They don’t brew their own beers, but they do make their own sausages.
There was a fair bit of people at 8:30 pm on a Tuesday. Enough to not feel lonely, but not even close to filing a quarter of the place. They have classic bench style seating.
There were 18 beers on tap tonight with a good selection of German and some local beers along with a random assortment of others. They also have a large selection of alcohol.
The food menu has the mainstays: sausages, schnitzel, and pretzels along with some other sandwiches and breakfast.
I had the sausage sampler with the Hunter, jalapeño cheddar, and regular bratwurst. The jalapeño has really pronounced jalapeño flavor which is great. The Hunter, a combo of venison, bison, and pork was also good. A touch smoky, but flavorful. The brat was my least favorite. It just has a raw flavor I don’t care for.
They were out of sweet potato spaetzel, something I was looking forward to trying. I settled for the duck fat fries. They are thick, but flimsy. I can’t say I taste duck fat, and by all accounts, I shouldn’t like them, but I can’t stop eating them.
Finally there is okay mustard which is a bit creamier than I’d want with a pretzel (maybe they have other for the pretzels?) and some zippy, dry kraut.
The staff greeted me right away and answered my questions while also making good suggestions. Overall, while I’ve had better food, I also wouldn’t turn...
Read moreThe bartender tried to hide the fact that they were out of what I ordered- she brought me a different beer in a glass. However, I had ordered one in a can because I have a movement disorder and may drop a glass when someone else wouldn’t. I have food sensitivities and do not drink alcohol, so this is a big deal to me (I ordered a nonalcoholic beer).
I am frustrated that she didn’t simply tell me I needed to order something else, because it is deceptive to bring me something different from what I ordered, not tell me, and hide it with a glass. When she brought me the bottle of the other one (easier to use than a glass), I noticed, but she dismissed the beers as being similar. However, they are not the same and, more importantly, the substitute was not what I ordered.
The layout was a bit difficult but not horrible. The lines block the way through, and it was confusing trying to figure out a way to secure a place in line when needing to sit down. The building was incredibly loud, and very much in need of some acoustic dampening to give a better vibe than everyone shouting over each other’s echoes. The old beer halls were made of wood and other things that absorb and diffuse a lot more reflections than the cube shape of the “hall.” The lighting is not great but...
