Let me start by saying that I'm super familiar w/West Indian food: I've been to Trinidad a few times, and have eaten, and cooked, a lot of homemade Caribbean food in this country, too. And, for the most part, this is the real deal, y'all. As good as down in TnT!
My friend brought me goat roti and macaroni pie from here a few weeks ago--both were on point!
Savory, tender goat and aloo curry inside a huge, soft roti skin. It was such a big portion that although I hadn't eaten all day, I couldn't finish it in one sitting. I was tempted to try, though, because it was JUST. THAT. GOOD. Their macaroni pie did not disappoint either! If you like soul-food-style mac and cheese, you'll LOVE this.
It didn't bother me that channa (garbanzos) is not part of their roti filling, but I know some might miss it, so just sharing that info FYI.
The only thing I wouldn't order again was their callaloo. I know dasheen bush is difficult to get in the States, so people usually make "callaloo" with spinach and okra, but this wasn't like any callaloo I've ever had. It was neither pureed in a blender nor made smooth with a swizzle stick...it was more like boiled collard greens but lacking the flavor of Southern-style greens. Not gonna lie, I had to force myself to eat it because I was brought up never to waste food.
Idk if maybe it's just a regional Bajan variation, but it wasn't for me.
That said, everything else I had, including the mango punch, was perfect. Can't wait to go there in person next time and try their patties and doubles!
Keep up the good work,...
Read moreThis is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Nestled right in the heart of Virgil village, Bridgetown Roti is a cozy lunch spot. Conveniently located across from the LACC campus, this eatery showcases a modern take on Caribbean classics.
I personally love Caribbean restaurants and often wish there were more of them around. So when I walked past while on a walk around the neighborhood, I just had to check them out.
The first time I went, I tried their sweet potato patties and jerk cucumber salad w/ hibiscus guava tea to drink. Everything was delicious. The patties were expertly seasoned, and the pastry was flaky and baked to perfection. The cucumber salad was bright and chilled, while on the spicier side. I was surprised by how large the salad portion was. It was very filling and I had enough for an entire helping to save for later (easily sharable for two people.)
The guava tea was verrrrrry refreshing especially because it was a particularly hot day. It also wasn't too sweet which I've experienced before.
Overall the establishment itself was clean, welcoming, and great for take out or dining in. The staff was not only helpful but all very friendly.
Note: They are cashless. I actually ended up forgetting my phone and cards at home. However the owner (Kareem) was kind enough to make an exception. I enjoyed my visit so much that I went back two days later for the jerk wings and mint lemonade (the kind with cream). They all remembered my name and we're super kind (and the food was just as yummy!).
Make sure to check them out! I know...
Read moreMy husband's family is from Barbados and we LOVE rotis!! (Rotis are like an Indian style burrito - the ultimate the comfort food). In Barbados, there is a strong Indian influence due to the spice trade that used to travel through the West Indies/Caribbean. We always get rotis at Chefette (a restaurant chain in Barbados). We were SO THRILLED to find a place with Bajan food in Los Angeles!! (Bajan is what the people from Barbados call themselves). So we got all the rotis of course . They were phenomenal!!!! Our absolute favorite was the Curry Chicken just because of our nostalgia and we love chicken haha. You can tell these were created with some culinary skill. Would recommend eating these right away. Actually just eat these in your car because a moment without these is a moment without joy. We live in the SFV but we would drive through LA traffic to come back!! Stop off at Chinatown or Olvera street on your way home. :)
Also there is free street parking right out front. Safe neighborhood. Place your order online then go drive to pick it up. Text or call them once you arrive and they will bring your order out! (November 2020 during Covid for context!). This place just opened up I believe! Please support them! It’s...
