I’m from Texas and spent a good portion of my life in San Antonio. Home State’s breakfast tacos do give me a taste of home, flour tortilla of course, however the cost is completely different.
I truly miss the breakfast tacos in San Antonio on homemade flour tortillas, which is just not common in Southern California and HomeState delivers that taste and flavor.
Now I grew up being able to go to literally ANY Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast and getting amazing homemade tortillas as it is very normal at a very competitive price. $3.50 for a taco I’m used to getting at $.99 cents at most is crazy to me. And not due to inflation or new costs. I was in S.A a few months ago where I could get the usual special that basically every Mexican drive thru breakfast tacos place has, 3 for $2.99. Now all three have to be the same thing. My go-to has always been bean and cheese.
Still, great little spot. Service is always phenomenal and the tacos do cure an itch. The price per taco is just a bit hard to swallow. But I still frequent because damn, they taste just like they would in San Antonio. I also recommend switching to cheddar cheese instead of Monterrey Jack for their bean and cheese for a more authentic vibe to...
Read moreI order from this location on Chow Now regularly. When I saw a sign stating that if I downloaded the HomeState app and ordered through that instead I would get a free taco, I was excited. Who doesn't love free tacos? I downloaded the app, made my order but realized it wasn't taking off the free taco. No problem, I was nearby so I just went in and spoke with the manager.
It was almost as if they had no knowledge of what was on their own sign. I asked if there was a promo code, if I had to enter something, if I needed to do something extra. I was met with hurried confusion, just simply told to "order online." Needless to say, my order was full price and the same manager handed me my non-free taco without a question, even after I pressed the issue again.
You make tacos, you don't trouble shoot IT issues, I get it. That being said, the sign is literally twenty feet away, so people are going to have questions about the promotion. Maybe offer them a little more guidance than irritated blank stares.
Also, when I initially spoke with the manager the place was relatively empty. Of course if they were slammed and I wander in trying to get free stuff, I would expect a less than excited response. But this was...
Read moreAs a native Texan, Home State tugs at the heartstrings. They very deservedly won best flour tortilla in Southern California from the KCRW Masa Madness competition, For which they probably displayed a plaque at the store entrance. For my money and taste buds, their breakfast tacos with or without eggs beat out their anytime tacos. The Guadalupe (chorizo, eggs, and cheese) reminds me so much of the spicy delicacies found at little taco carts in Austin. Home State's breakfast tacos are well balanced, wrapped in perfectly fluffy flour tortillas, and a nice portion. Their queso approximates authentic Texas queso, but I find it a little runny compared to the thick, creamy (admittedly derived from processed cheese) staple of east and central Texas. The charro beans Cowboy Cup is EVERYTHING. I was really impressed with all of the textures and flavors achieved, but not muddled, by topping beans with pickled onions, guacamole, jalapeños, and pico. Don't skip on the frozen margarita for an even more authentic experience. Seating is pretty limited, as you might be relegated to the patio on a...
