If you want to truly experience this place, you have to come for lunch. I was surprised to see that the rating was so low for here, and after reading some reviews I feel as though people came in with the wrong expectations. So, I'm here to give you a game plan for how to love your experience here:
Step 1: Come for lunch during the week day to take advantage of their lunch special. The lunch special consists of a specialty roll or a lunch box. My preferred choice is getting the specialty roll because you get free miso soup and 5 pieces of sushi with your order. Best part? You will leave having spent only about $15 including tip and you will be stuffed.
Step 2: Order a specialty roll. Although this place has some great sushi pieces, it's strong suit is definitely it's specialty rolls. The tempura rolls are definitely the way to go. They literally tempura the entire roll, which gives it a whole new perspective because it is warm and crunch and then cooler in the middle. My absolute favorite roll is the Crazy Danny roll which has spicy tuna in it. Also, their eel sauce is amazing.
Step 3: Don't come here in a rush. My one negative opinion regarding this place is that the service is kind of lacking. I have at times waited for either my meal or the check for much longer that I thought was necessary. Therefore, if you come here with some time to spare, you will leave a much happier camper. And hey, tip is up to you, so if the server truly was rude, don't...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars, I would. This place is a disaster masquerading as a sushi restaurant. From the moment we walked in, we were bombarded with obnoxiously loud music that made it impossible to have a normal conversation — it felt more like a cheap nightclub than a dining establishment.
The service was some of the worst I’ve ever encountered. No one greeted us properly, and our server didn’t bother confirming a single item we ordered. Unsurprisingly, several dishes showed up that we never asked for — and guess what? They had the audacity to charge us for them. When we pointed it out, the staff acted confused and dismissive, as if we were the problem.
But the cherry on top was the manager — an arrogant, rude, power-tripping nightmare. Instead of apologizing or even pretending to care, they doubled down and insisted we pay for the food we never ordered, threatening to call security if we didn’t comply. Completely unprofessional and borderline hostile.
The food? Terrible at best. Fish didn’t taste fresh, rolls fell apart on the plate, and presentation looked like a high schooler made it in a rush. Combine that with a headache from the music and the sheer stress of dealing with this place, and it honestly felt like a prank gone wrong.
Never again. There are plenty of sushi spots with actual hospitality and basic competence. Don’t waste your money here — unless you enjoy being yelled at, scammed, and fed soggy,...
Read moreAs far as California sushi restaurants go, Sushi Dan is pretty on par with most other spots as far as quality and menu variety. I had a bento lunch special, and all of my chosen items were tasty, and I felt that it was a good value for the amount of stuff I got. The fish tasted clean with a good texture, and the rice was cooked well.
I requested the mixed tempura as one of my items, and specified 3 different times that I had a shellfish allergy and could not eat shrimp, and the waiter confirmed with me that it was no problem to make the tempura without the shrimp pieces. My food arrived with the shrimp anyway. Luckily my allergies are not very severe and I was okay with just putting the pieces to the side, but it made me less likely to trust Sushi Dan with handling food allergies moving forward.
The decor was very bright, it felt strange to be staring at myself in a giant mirror as I ate, while a neon tree blasted me with brightly colored LEDs. The music was loud as well, but it was pretty empty at that hour so I’m sure it’s less noticeable when it gets busier. Not my preferred sensory experience. I will say that everything was nice and clean, and my water was always being refilled. The staff was very attentive.
I would come back for the lunch specials (perhaps picking something without a risk of cross contamination next time), but wouldn’t make this my regular Studio...
