It was all good, until the DJ got rude with my date.
I came here this evening with my girlfriend. I was OK overpaying for average drinks. I was Ok listening to overplayed tracks from middle school, strung together with less attention than a Spotify playlist on shuffle.
But, I am not OK with getting treated like a second class citizen, by someone who can’t keep a dance floor for more than one song.
When my girlfriend approached the DJ with a simple and somewhat silly request for Britney, he responded with a confrontational tone, to the tune of “oh, you belong over there.” He gestured back to our seats, beyond the recently vacated dance floor.
I’m not sure if his statement was intended to be a broad gesture about where women belong in this establishment. Or, maybe he was Insinuating toward those who weren’t of his own holy whiteness.
My girlfriend and I have approached many DJ’s of many different levels of stature in LA, NY, Berlin, Paris, etc etc…. And, we have never been treated with such broad disdain and have never been so rudely dismissed. Even those DJ’s most uninterested in taking requests will offer up a smile and a shrug at minimum.
It goes without saying that we will not be coming back. Furthermore, I would discourage anyone from attending this establishment if you like good music and a welcoming...
Read moreI've heard enough about this place that I want to go back again, but my first impression was a little disappointing.
I ordered the Midnight Oil which tasted pretty much exactly what I expected (cold brew) which is good but it was also not particularly inspiring. My friends ordered different drinks but none of them seemed particularly impressed. This leads me to believe next time I should try the whiskey flights because maybe this is just not the best spot for cocktails.
It was not difficult for us to find a table and space for our group. However, the bar was extremely busy so placing orders took a long time. In terms of the staff's ability to serve, it was great. It just took a long time to get it done and there was no clear queue or order to the people crowded around the bar. Even one person working the floor to get orders might have made a difference.
The space and decor was really delightful, but the music and atmosphere was pretty typical for a noisy LA bar. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but considering it is a Japanese whiskey bar in little Tokyo, I was kind of expecting more Japanese sensibility to the atmosphere as to what I might expect from a bar in Japan.
I definitely intend to go back, probably just at a less busy time and with a more...
