Sushi Ukai — Restaurant in Lyons Township

Sushi Ukai is a delightful little Japanese restaurant located downtown La Grange. They offer a variety of food options, including main course grilled meals, noodle dishes, appetizers, salads, soups and of course, sushi. Their Alaskan roll came with boiled salmon which is something my girlfriend had not seen before and thus was not extremely satisfied with it, but only because it was unexpected. The Godzilla roll was very good, fresh, and had the flavors pair very nicely. I personally had a miso soup and one of the chef's specials, the Orchard Roll, which is a vegetarian sushi roll that combines the unique flavors of mango and jalapeno with a unique black rice and asparagus, and then topped with shitake mushroom. It was delicious and unique, but for 13$, I expected a roll of regular size, around 8 pieces or so, but it only comes as 5 regularly sized pieces. I been eating here for a while. My son loves the sushi there and it’s always nice to go but today was a little different. I have a two year old as well and he has autism which causes him to stim (for the ppl the have no knowledge a stim is a self-regulatory behavior it can be of all types) my son in particular sounds like loud humming (ahhhhhhh). I understand it can be loud but there is nothing I can do to prevent it. He stims in and out not constantly. While waiting for our drinks he was stimming and the waitress approached me and asked me to quiet him because it was “disturbing my(her) customers”. He wasn’t running around, he was sitting on our table writing on a paper. Although I understand it can be loud, he was not doing it intentionally or for a long period of time. The restaurant itself is not a quiet restaurant to begin with. I was able to make him stop by giving him my phone thankfully but what would have been if that didn’t work? I did explain it to her. This place is perfect for brunch with friends. We were in their special room that had carpets and doors. The atmosphere was very private and comfortable. It was an elevated experience for sure! Although be prepared to take off your shoes if you want to visit the special room! The staff was very nice and patient with us. She remembered all of our orders and was very kind when serving us. The food was magnificent. Truly, the flavors of the dishes were delightful. Some of my friends who never tried Asian food loved everything! The variety of dishes they offer will leave no one hungry! The sushi was fresh and high-quality, grilled fish was flavorful, the broth was very rich and tasty. Not only is the quality great, but the quantity as well! Almost all of us needed to-go boxes because of the amount of food we were given! The food was definitely worth the price! Thus place is great!
