Early morning, pulled myself out of the bed. I knew today was going to be a great day... or so I thought. I checked the temperature and it shows 9 degrees.I try to feed my cats and the little one is stealing the older cat’s food. After all the mess, I open my precious coffee cabinet. There are my aeropress, v60, and my Chemex. Which one should I pick? Chemex it is. I am going to my fuel myself with some freshly roasted beans. But as i turned around, I see that there are no coffee beans left. Is today Friday or monday? Is there a god? I don’t know. What are all these churches for? And who is Jesus’s Dad?
So I decided to bundle up and take a walk to the latest coffee shop in MadTown, Wonderstate Coffee. I was there 30 minutes early in my car because i did not want to walk even though I live 5 minutes away (don’t @ me, i did not have coffee). I was listening to NPR’s podcast and I watched team members working hard to prep for a busy day.
5 minutes before opening time, I braced myself for this cold weather and waited outside to see if i can get in early. BINGO. a kind hearted team member who was earring a beanie and a flannel opened the door for me. Faith in humanity restored.
I was greeted with a warm welcome and asked to ask any questions if i have any. I was thankful. I always check the roast dates on the beans so I went ahead and checked the roast dates, January of 2021 (freshly roasted). This is when I knew that I had to share this good news. If the coffee beans are all freshly roasted, you know that they care about the quality of the beans. The beans are the paper of the coffee industry after all.
I also got a cup of coffee on top of the beans. As I left the cafe, I took a sip of the coffee. The warmth of the sun entering my body. I thought I was hallucinating. Could it be? Is it COVID? No. It was actually the sunrise hitting my face. But, I knew that this was well worth my time.
I am now typing this on my iPad drinking that same cup of coffee.
Overall, I am no outdoor’s person but this probably is the spiritual hike that Mt. Everest Conquerers describes. I would encourage the owners and the marketers to put a coffee shop on the base camp of Mt. Everest, it would be such a surprise and delight.
5/5.
Thank you Wonderstate and the team members.
godspeeed and safe shifts...
Read moreI drove a long way to be able to work from this coffee shop due to my internet not working in my apartment. I’ve worked here a couple of times before and had no issues.. until this time.
After two hours of working, my internet cut out and I was directed to a screen that said my internet time limit was reached. I’ve never seen this before at a downtown coffee shop. I went to the front and asked them if they could extend it for me (and I explained my situation) and they said that they couldn’t do anything for me and actually told me to go to another coffee shop since they were closing in a couple of hours. Mind you, I had just ordered food and another drink (second drink) right before that happened. I had to quickly rush out since I had a meeting to go to.
In addition, I ordered a London fog (that tasted average) and I ordered a cappuccino (that tasted really bad, the espresso tasted very strange) - I also ordered an avocado toast with a poached egg. The toast was great but the poached egg was hard and not runny.
All in all, a few things I look for in coffee shops are consistency, dependability, great coffee, and atmosphere. I don’t mind splurging on a great experience. I didn’t get any of that this time around and wasted a lot of money. I’ll give two stars since I did have a couple of okay...
Read moreI've come to Wonderstate Coffee twice now, and it's easily become my favorite coffee shop in Madison. The employees are all very kind and passionate about the coffee they serve. They will take the time to tell you more about the coffee they serve, where it comes from, and what flavor profiles they have.
A huge selling point is they do have some single origin coffee beans! Mostly used for their pour overs, you can ask them what they have in the moment and they'll give you more information about it.
I tried a single origin coffee from Kenya and it was a lighter roast with some sweet and citric tones to it. This ain't your average Starbucks coffee...
Additionally, I tried a salted Caramel Latte and it was the perfect amount of sweetness without being too sweet. (FYI the latte art looked much prettier before my clumsy self walked this over to the nearby table...) Their salted chocolate chip cookie was also way better than most chocolate chip cookies I've had in the area. And fresh, too!
They also have several coffee beans available for purchase, and several brewing equipment available in store to buy as well. Check this place out if you're a...
