The tacos here are excellent, and easily some of the most exquisite tacos I have ever had.
I had the honor of having the birria (shredded beef) tacos. I have been trying to find birria tacos for the longest time, granted they weren't the birria tacos that have that deep, rich, luscious broth that smothers all crevices and square inch of the taco, and stuffed with ooey gooey cheese... but I was still very excited to try them!
When I was first handed the box of all the goodies, I was immediately hit by all the beautiful aromas of the amazing tacos. However, when I opened up the box to check the contents, I was confused on why it was only the tortillas and beef. There were no other toppings or fixings, it was just plain meat. Apparently, all of the fixings like guacamole, pickled red onions, other sauces, and a few other things are on the side of the truck in a little box. I'm so glad that I was able to figure out where the fixings were because it was very confusing because there was no message or sign saying that the fixings were self-serve, and none of the workers told anyone that they were there either. So if you do come here, just know that the other components for your taco or burrito is on the right side in a little box.
Anyways, the tacos themselves... First, the aromas are amazing. Then, not only did the fixings elevate the tacos with even more texture and flavors, but it also made the tacos looks gorgeous! The pickled red onions added that wonderful pop of color and added a crunchy, crisp, and kind of sweet element. Then, the sliced raw onions and cilantro added some freshness and some more color as well, and the like wedges finished everything off with some much needed acidity. All of these elements together, combined with the super juicy, INSANELY tender, flavorful meat made an EXCELLENT taco!! Every bite was enjoyable with explosions of flavor and texture. I really wish I ordered more than two tacos because I scarfed them down.
Overall, some of the best tacos I have ever had, and is definitely up there with the best food I had while on Maui. Who knows when the next time I will be back on Maui, but if I do, this place will definitely be at the top to...
Read moreWe Went there right after a 4 mile hike to refill on food, the place is good , I visited from the land of tacos and taco trucks, with an open mind , We ordered the Burrito al pastor and the Carne Asada tacos and also 1 al pastor and a few cokes to wash them down with, I can't have tacos without a coke or some type of soda. The flavor of the food was very good the burrito was very tasty , the al pastor meat was cooked perfectly as well as seasoned, they grilled the burrito on one side which gave the flour tortilla a nice crunch to it. The number salsas they have is great , very spicy, medium and mild also they have guacamole salsa wich is awesome and pickled onions to put on your food. Yelper friends! When in maui try Ono Tacos if you want a true taste of Mexican food. The style of food here is from the northern mexico, from the state of Sonora, everything is preped fresh daily before opening, how do i know? I meet the owner Jose who also operates the place and he shared some of his seasoning secrets with me, really nice guy if you ask me. Anyway, There are a few other good places in maui for tacos and burritos, keep in mind they all have their own style and seasoning and it will never be like what you are used too back home. Me, I like this one the best by...
Read morewaited in the hot sun for my food after ordering and I see the worker place two containers on the side so I thought perhaps it's a phone order and I continue to wait patiently. Two customers behind me got their orders before I did, then the worker opened the containers sitting on the counter and he realized he never said anything about my order being ready and called out my order as if it just finished. No apology, no acknowledgement for the error or anything.
Not sure how they have all the good reviews that they do. The sauce they have on their items taste like a bootleg mayonnaise version of the creamy jalapeno sauce that comes on taco bell quesadillas and quesaritos.
Also, I'm not sure if anyone would consider it a bonus, but I definitely do not, I got a few chunks of fish in my food and I ordered chicken. The taste is very fishy. I'm a fisherman here on Maui and I know what fresh fish taste like and it's not what they're serving.
Shrimp tacos were also pretty lack luster and over cooked
I suggest you check out the taco trucks by Maria Lanikila Catholic church instead.
Really really not sure how this place has a 4.7 rating. Has no one else that reviewed this place consumed good...
