This review focuses solely on the service, and the reasons will soon become clear. TL;DR: my girlfriend burned her hand on a dangerously hot kerosene lantern while reaching for the menu, and the staff showed little concern.
The full story: We made a reservation a month in advance for 8:30 PM on a Tuesday. While we’re not from Miami, we are from New York City, where restaurants generally seat us promptly when we arrive with a reservation, especially on a weeknight. Naturally, we expected a highly-rated place like this to do the same.
When we arrived at 8:30, however, we were told our table wasn’t ready. It was raining outside, so we joined a small group of other guests with reservations huddled under the covered entryway to avoid getting wet. Shortly after, the hostess approached us and said, “You can’t stand there.” This left us confused—where were we supposed to stand? It was raining, and there was no waiting area indoors. If a restaurant can’t honor its reservations, it should at least provide a comfortable and reasonable place for guests to wait. And if it can’t do that, the staff should avoid being unnecessarily rude.
We were finally seated after waiting 20 minutes in the rain. Shortly after, my girlfriend reached across the table to grab a menu, accidentally brushing her hand against the kerosene lantern serving as a light source. If you didn’t already know (and we certainly didn’t), kerosene lanterns typically burn at 300–400°F. Predictably, she burned her hand badly.
She went to find cold water. Both bathrooms were occupied, but she spotted another sink nearby. She asked a staff member if she could use it, only to be told no because “we get in trouble for using that sink.” Instead, the staff member gave her a wet napkin and some burn cream, casually mentioning that this kind of incident happens “often” and that the wait staff “should be better” about warning guests.
She came back to the table in pain and told me what had happened. We decided to leave immediately. On our way out, we explained to the hostess (the same one who had told us to stand in the rain) what had occurred. Her response? “I’m sure your server told you not to touch the lantern,” and, “Well, it is fire, after all.” The dismissive tone was shocking. Who would ever expect a restaurant to place an untouchably hot kerosene lantern on their tables instead of a safer alternative, like a candle or lamp? And to add insult to injury, my girlfriend was spoken down to while clearly in pain.
Overall, this was a terrible experience. The food might be good, but...
Read moreTo be clear I wish I could give 3.5 stars. I dont care how good the food is, poor attitudes ruin a place and make me not want to return. We were greeted by a nice host and hostess who told us although we were early we would need to wait for the exact time for the reservation which is fine. They offered us a table to wait out front and told us someone would come and get us a drink. When the waiter with long hair some of which tied in bun arrived 5 minutes later his attitude was rude. He was bothered and annoyed to be taking our drink. He came back 5 minutes later with the drinks saying "Here. What the name on the Res-o" again with a tone as if we inconvenienced him to do his job. We were sat shortly after our reservation and the lantern wasnt working well but well enough to see the table was not cleaned off well. The lantern was replaced shortly after our actual Waiter asked us what we wanted. To be clear his attitude seemed to be short as well in the beginning but became better as the night went on. He said " we treat you like family here" which is weird because most of the night my date and i felt like an inconvenience. Not the best since she took me here for my birthday. So we ordered 3 small plates. The first came out 15 minutes later. The octopus was AMAZING. It was cooked perfectly and in my long life of eating octopus this is close to, if not the best ive ever had. 15 minutes later our other two small plates showed up and the shrimp were good and the red sauce was very good and the stuffed zucchini was good as well. We then ordered 2 mains which the item list is very short on and we got the dumplings and the beef souvlaki. The beef was perfectly cooked and the dumpling sauce was very good and was perfect for dunking fries and for other items too. Now at this point our waiter was much more friendly which made it seem like the more money i spent the nicer he got. We decided to try dessert. We got the chocolate mousse. This was hyped up by our waiter. When it came it was flatter than a hand and the size of a saltine cracker. The chocolate "dessert" was bitter and could have benefitted from more sugar and im saying that as someone who doesn't enjoy overly sweet things and limits the amount of sugar i have daily. All and all the food itself was very good minus the dessert which needs work but the attitude which we received from the waiters has put me off to the restaurant and i will not return. $200 can get a good meal...

Tucked away in the heart of the Design District, Mandolin Aegean Bistro delivers an experience that is equal parts transportive and tantalizing. From the moment you step into the bougainvillea-draped courtyard, you’re transported to the sun-kissed shores of the Aegean—where every detail, from the whitewashed walls to the blue accents, feels meticulously considered. The ambiance? Mediterranean serenity meets Miami sophistication.
Our 9:00 PM reservation began with a brief wait, which under normal circumstances would be inconsequential. However, the hostess’s decision to seat us at a table right beside the entrance—directly on the path to the restrooms—was a misstep in an otherwise beautifully orchestrated evening. Not only did the location lack the intimacy enjoyed by other tables, but when we politely requested a different setting, the response was unnecessarily terse. A 20-minute additional wait was quoted, and the tone implied we were making an outlandish demand. What stood out more, however, was that another couple with the same reservation time was never offered that same less-desirable table—suggesting the hostess was fully aware of its shortcomings.
Fortunately, the misstep was redeemed when a second host escorted us to a far more suitable table and ushered in what became an exceptional evening. Our server was, in a word, superb. Warm, knowledgeable, and perfectly attuned to the rhythm of the evening—attentive without being intrusive, enthusiastic without being overbearing.
As for the food: a masterclass in restraint and flavor. The grilled octopus was a triumph—tender, smoky, and kissed with just enough lemon. The manti dumplings? Silky, savory, and wholly addictive. Each plate echoed the culinary traditions of the Aegean with a freshness and flair that never felt forced.
Had our evening not begun on a sour note, I would have had little hesitation in awarding a perfect score. But for a restaurant of this caliber, hospitality must remain seamless from start to finish. Still, Mandolin Aegean remains a gem well worth visiting—just be sure to advocate for your...
