The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. I went during off hours, between lunch and dinner, so was seated right away. To start, the chips and salsa are not complimentary, and would have been disappointing even if they were. The salsa was chunky and while bits of onion and cilantro were visible, the only flavor I got was of the tomato. They do have a homemade hot sauce in bottles if you ask for it. It added a bit of spice to the salsa, but it still was not great. The shredded beef chimichanga was cheesy, but not very flavorful. The black beans were extremely bland. The rice had green peas instead of the typical kernels of corn. The ground beef soft tacos were served on double mini tortillas and overstuffed, so you could easily separate them and get two tacos out of each. These too lacked any significant flavor. Even the 7Up and orange soda tried seemed to be lacking the normal amount of syrup. The tres leches cake had a very coarse texture, almost like cornbread. The cake was the real reason for the trip, because someone recommended it as the best in Hartford. So, 4 stars for service and 2 stars for food. Maybe this was an atypical experience, but sadly nothing tried warrants a return...

Absolutely NOT worth $20. The burrito although large was a prime example of quantity over quality. There was no fresh pico de gallo, the sauce on top tastes like it came out of a jar of Tostitos salsa, no guacamole, the inside of the burrito was mostly rice and beans which had a very mediocre flavor and the meat was almost non existent. In addition to that you have to park on the street in a sketchy neighborhood, the interior leaves much to be desired and the heat was off making for a very cold eating experience both literally and figuratively. There are several other great Mexican restaurants in Middletown that offer a warm welcoming dining experience, beautiful food presentation, free chips along with delicious homemade salsa, the burritos have fresh pico de gallo and guacamole all for the same price or even less than here. I would definitely NOT recommend this...

This place is good....and their fish taco is very good...ive gone twice both times I just picked up....the only thing I will say....their credit card/payment screen is one where they ask what percent of your bill you want to tip on your cc....I guess I'm old school but this is a feature I do not care for....it is optional but I feel it puts the patron on the spot for a tip and idk I just don't think of it as a tippable service....however both times I did tip lol so I guess it works. I will most likely be paying cash when I go to avoid this....it's not just this place I just think its werid when dunkin doughnuts or this place does it...it's like you shouldn't ask for a tip for doing your job....in my job as a Nurse I don't ask for a tip because I did something that is basically my job....it is a feature becoming more & more used....and I just...

On my way to my niece's swim meet at Wesleyan (Freeman Center), I ordered birria tacos (take-out). The woman who served me was friendly, and the service was fast. The tacos were freshly made, the beef was moist, and the birria consommé was good. Extra cilantro was provided as requested. The decor was cozy and authentic, and included a framed picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe. -- Who doesn't love Our Lady of Guadalupe? -- This is a cozy, family owned restaurant. The photo is of the tacos at the swim meet. One of the parents commented that my birria tacos looked delicious! Overall, I recommend the birria tacos at Iguanas Ranas, and I would return if I'm in Middletown again.

If you want authentic Mexican food, I've yet to find a better place locally than Iguanas Ranas. The food is prepared in a traditional style, the tortillas are fresh, and the drinks are excellent. Add that to the fact that you'd be hard-pressed to find more reasonable prices, and you have an excellent night out. Oh, and the staff is very friendly and accomodating. Two recommendations--Chile Verde Burrito and the taco platter (The Al Pastor is something I've never tasted outside of Mexico and the Southwestern US. Rare for New England, for certain.) I've included pictures of both.
