I would be rating this 5 stars if it wasn't for our god awful server and the free mini birthday dessert they gave me.
TLDR: Decent cheap food, extensive menu, Jennifer Lopez is a bad server and should be avoided at all costs. Will probably go back in hopes that she's no longer there.
The food overall was good. Not wonderfully amazing quality, but much better than I expected for the price. The fish tasted fresh, but was hastily prepared sometimes
The price is unbeatable. All the rolls are 50% off, their menu is also rather extensive.
Our server: Her name was Jennifer Lopez. she mentioned she had just started working a few weeks back, so we gave her some leeway at first. I have never been served so badly. She would disappear for 15-20 minutes at a time to the employee only section. She would visit the table behind us but would either not see us or ignore us when we tried to get her attention. This happened MULTIPLE TIMES. That time adds up. We spent HOURS there just because we were waiting for her. One time she stopped by told us our food should be ready soon and she ran out before we could get a word in. We hadn't ordered food and had been trying to get her attention for 20 minutes to order. She disappeared for a while again before taking our order. She also knows NOTHING about the sushi on the menu (we learned after the first time we asked her about a roll, it was fine we avoided asking more questions) but then she argued with us when we told her we didn't get what we order. We ordered 3 hand rolls, we got 1 hand roll and 2 maki rolls. She put the food down so quickly then ran off so we waited our usual time at this point for her to return. We told her we ordered hand rolls expecting the food to go back and be corrected. All she did was ARGUE that those rolls were hand rolls and she put it into the computer and that is what they gave her (we checked the receipt, she didn't put in hand rolls) and that we'll "eat it anyway, so it's fine". We realized it was moot and ate the rolls. I want to emphasize that this was this PARTICULAR server and from what we saw this was not the culture of the restaurant or even a reflection of the other servers near us who were attentive, responsive, and receptive.
Overall we will return and hope that the company made the wise choice to let her go. If not we'll see what we can do to get another server. I'll update this rating accordingly the next...
Read more"Cheap" sushi really shouldn't be a thing. Good sushi inherently is not cheap if the source is even mildly considered. However, I will say Yi Sushi does a decent job at stretching their ingredients to make palatable inexpensive sushi. Compared to some of the other half-priced sushi joints, Yi Sushi may have a slight edge, and the table service is usually okay. I should mention that's once you are finally seated. As a long time restaurant manager I can say that there is simply no excuse to have half the tables of your restaurant open while a crowd of people anxiously await being seated. Seems pretty typical for Utah establishments to understaff but when you're clearly busy and running a successful business why wouldn't you hire a host to deal with this chaotic situation? Seems lazy to me and also creates a disorganized atmosphere which makes me wonder what other corners are being cut? I'll mention I've never been sick after eating here but the fact that comes as a genuine surprise isn't necessarily reassuring. Maybe I've just built an iron stomach from eating all this 50% off sushi? ;) Kidding aside I'm glad that this place is doing well and I hope they can continue to keep up the momentum. If you're used to landlocked sushi places this will probably float your boat and definitely won't tank the budget. Important note, the Chinese/ Japanese amalgam always weirds me out but since there's no good Chinese anywhere in Utah I thought we'd try this for takeout one night. Based on appearance their Chinese dishes looked pretty good. But alas looks can be painfully deceiving. I'll simply just say, don't order the Chinese. Not many restaurants can maintain this kind of output and certainly not one that can't even figure to how to seat its customers. Three stars for passable incredibly cheap sushi, mediocre service, and...
Read moreMy aunt and i take out from here often. The customer service for dinning in was always a guess on what we got. We decided to go in and eat yesterday. I ordered a roll called the spider which has crab in it. It looked good but it had the worst taste of old fish and the after taste would not go away, i felt ill trying to get one bite down. Like nothing fresh. The other rolls and food we had tasted good like the food usually does. But this roll was unedible. I had one bite and asked the waitress if i could do a different roll because that one just didnt taste fresh. It was hard to swallow. She said it had crab thats how crab is supposed to be fishy. We know what crab is and the other rolls we had with crab was fine. The waitress ended up just kind of ignoring us and brought somebody else over. Again we said what we said. She was not very nice about it. We told her she should try it then. The after taste was the worst part. Basically telling us we have to pay for it even if we dont eat it. What would they have done if i gotten ill over this? Say thats what supposed to happen? We didnt try to make a fuss just a simple hey this is not a good roll, it doesnt taste fresh like the other rolls we have, it kind of made me feel grossed out to eat anything else. The lady said we dont do exchanges you get what you order. Thats fine. We just decided we wont dine in anymore and we definitely will not be ordering take out anymore. We dont want an accidental spoiled fish to...
