This review was by myself and husband lol
We came in today and yesterday. We waited 30-40mins on opening day and 20 mins today (the day after). Which is fine and expected, I have waited this long or longer at other restaurants when eating in. So this is not a complaint, however, the service was not moving at a pick-n-go pace or at a lunch hour rush pace.
We ordered on opening day, 1 pani popo, 1 half moon, 2 blueberry scones, 4 mince pie, 2 chicken pies, 2 sausage rolls, 1 lemon cake, 1 guava cake
The pani popo was delicious! I love that there is a place in SLC county that sells these by singles 😋
The minced pies were my favorites, very delicious. It was missing hot sauce but I just added that at home.
We did not get our scones but we should have checked our order before leaving.
The sausage roll was very heavy with meat but bland.
My husband ate the chicken pies and he said they were bland and he would go back but only for the minced pie or steak pie.
All the pies have delicious crust!
The lemon cake was nice and moist and had a very tart flavor. This is not a subtle cake. If you love lemon bars or a strong lemon meringue pie, than this is for you.
The guava cake, taste nothing like the guava cake I grew up on in Hawaii. Which is totally fine. I love to try all different types of chocolate cakes and I also like to try different guava cakes.
There guava cake has cream cheese in it, which allot of other bakers in the mainland adds for unsure reasons. The cake is rich and moist. Guava glaze is very sweet and has strawberry flavoring too. But all that is over powered by the cream cheese. If you love cream cheese anything, this is the cake for you.
The next day, I went in to get pani popo at 11am and they said “we are sold out for the day” not happy about that. Since I’m coming from bountiful, I decided to order other items.
So I ordered, 1 masi Samoa pack, 1 strawberry cream cupcake and of course 2 delicious minced pies lol
The strawberry cream cupcake, is a vanilla cake batter, dipped in white chocolate, whipped cream icing with diced of strawberries in the icing mix and topped with a half strawberry.
I’m a baker so I’m not going to critic any of baked items on flavor but just giving the description. I just appreciate a bakers view on desserts.
Here’s why they get a 4 star.
due to my missing scones there should be a post on SM or on the website to say what items are solded out. I wish there were 2 cashiers I wish there were 2 individuals who greets plp when coming in and takes orders being out on pani popo by 11am is not good
Other than that, I enjoyed this place and I’ll be coming in...
Read moreWe have been loyal customers of Sagato for some time and have always enjoyed the food. However, our last two visits were extremely disappointing and raise serious concerns about the customer experience.
On one occasion, we arrived at 6:30 p.m. only to be told that several key menu items, including fish and chips and sausages, were already unavailable, despite posted hours until 7 p.m. It left the impression that staff were simply eager to close early.
When we returned earlier on another evening, hoping for a better experience, we instead encountered an employee at the front who seemed disengaged and inconvenienced by customers. During our wait, we watched as multiple guests received the same dismissive treatment. One couple mentioned it was their first time visiting, and rather than being welcomed or given a recommendation, they were met with silence.
Most troubling, another customer raised what seemed to be a simple question or concern. Instead of addressing it professionally, the employee escalated the situation by repeatedly telling the customer to “please leave” — in full view of at least four other guests. The interaction was unnecessarily confrontational, and it drove away not only that customer but also another family who chose to walk out without ordering after witnessing the exchange.
In total, five potential or returning customers were lost in just one evening due to the poor handling of basic customer service. This type of behavior is not only unprofessional but damaging to Sagato’s reputation, particularly in today’s economy where dining out is a treat and people expect a positive experience along with their meal.
Sagato has a strong product and has earned a loyal following, but frontline staff can make or break a business. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously and ensures training and accountability are put in place. Customers should leave remembering the food and hospitality — not the discomfort of being...
Read moreI have been there 5 days out of the 6 days they were open last week. Yes, long lines and sold out food didn't stop me from going. If you have ever open a bakery with such a high demands of certain pastries that you can only get in New Zealand before the London Market and the Sagato Bakery & Cafe, than you can understand why they were always sold out. Their meat pies n sausage rolls are to die for...yes, I said to die for. You can't even get a meat pie or sausage rolls within a 500 mile radius that can compare to theirs. Its soooo yummy for your tummy. If you're on keto...well, you can by pass that flaky, onolicoous crust and eat the meat but you will seriously be tempted to eat it. So you mind as well eat the whole meat pie...lol. Don't be so harsh n quick to judge them for their customer service. Those are young, freshmen college students in their first job learning to balance college life and a job. Its not an excuse but trust me customer service goes both ways. A demanding/entitlement customer is never a good thing. They're learning and I believe in time they will be awesome at taking your orders. I'm sure the Sagato's have learned a lot in their first week, don't give up on them. Like any restaurant and other food establishment there's always room to improve....its only their first week. They are an awesome family in the community, doing good things and being positive role models for all of our Pacific Islander businesses in Utah. And seriously if it wasn't for the Sagato's where would get some meat pies from? Yeah, I bet ya'll didn't think of that...huh! So be grateful that the Sagato Bakery & Cafe is here to satisfy your meat pie cravings. Faafetai tele lava mo mea lelai. God bless you all...
