Chabaar is a little past Fashion Place Mall. The outside of the building is decent, maybe more on the older side. The interior is average, not anything eye-catching or fancy. The booths in the middle of the room are huge; it was big enough to fit my party of 8 people. Shortly after everyone arrived, the server came and gave us our menus. We looked over our menus for quite a while because there was an array of choices. We finally chose our dishes and waited for the waiter to come back.
She came back and explained the spice levels to us. We ordered our dishes and starting waiting. Most of my friends ordered curry or rice dishes, while I ordered a Pork Salad. To be honest, I am not a big fan of Thai food. I have only had genuine Thai food just once and I didn't really enjoy the food I had at the time, but I decided to give it another chance (you know, give it the benefit of the doubt). I tried ordering something different, like this salad. The food came out in a timely manner.
Before taking a bite out of my salad, it looked delicious; I couldn't wait to eat it! I took a huge bite of the lettuce and I gagged... It was so salty. It tasted like the salad was drenched in salty fish sauce, mixed with water, and just more salt on top with maybe a hint of something citrus-y, like lime. Since I bought it, I might as well eat it, so I ate a piece of lettuce one by one and tried keeping it down; I couldn't finish my salad in the end. I decided to box the rest of my food and take it home. Once I got home, I let my brother try some of my salad and he took a bite of it and decided not to eat anymore because it was so salty.
So, overall, I would not come back to Chabaar, but this is a personal preference. My friends enjoyed their curry, but they did complain that the rice portion was pretty small. I had a couple bites of their curry and it was okay, not something I would order for myself. The service was average. They came back to check on us every once in a while and made sure we had everything we needed. They split our checks kind of weirdly, but it worked out in the end. If I didn't have such a disgusting tasting salad, I would probably give this place 2 or 3 stars, but this salad really was the worst tasting salad I have ever had. I've heard great reviews about this place, however, this place is...
Read moreWORST DECISION OF 2018 for a restaurant for DINNER is the best way to describe it.
It’s unfortunate, cuz we came due to the 4 star reviews we saw in Yelp. NO CLUE, what people found good.
I’m leaving 2 stars simply because it looked decent inside and the servers were nice
First, on arrival, the place didn’t smell like a regular Thai place, It smelled like fish. We should have gotten the memo then, but we were starving,
Between My family of 6, we ordered: -Pad Thai 2x -Drunken noodles (recommendation by waitress and the only decent thing I ate) -Tom Kha gai soup -Tom yum soup
The pad Thai seemed they got happy on the citric juices and salt. Felt like eating noodles over lemons. The plate looked really pretty when it arrived, but the taste of pad Thai was not found. With a little spice it was acceptable for me.
Tom yum soup, (horrible) yes it’s a sweet and sour soup, but we couldn’t eat it. It was like eating chicken and veggies in pure vinegar. (I didn’t order it so I didn’t care).
Tom ka ghai, felt like we were eating coconut milk in pure vinegar, extremely watery, and the chopped up bamboo (which was rock solid) was in every spoonful. I’m usually ok with the string taste as since I know it’s a little stronger style soup, but my wife who usually loves this soup couldn’t eat it. We couldn’t even clearly see the bamboo to remove it as most restaurants leave the long shoot so you can know not to eat it. My mother had to throw it up because of all the pieces of bamboo in her mouth that came in with the spoon full.
Since I ordered the drunken noodles and put spice in my pad Thai, I finished my food, and due to starving children and a starving wife, we ate our plates. This is why I chose not to complain to management as we just wanted to get out it there, and how do we say: “your food was gross, but we were so hungry we ate it anyway.”
We had to go to cold stone ice cream to remove the saltiness in our throats, and got home and drank some intestinal catalyzer for our stomach.
By the way, the men’s bathroom was ATROCIOUS, not clean at all.
I hope management sees this, and take all of this into consideration. I couldn’t believe how poorly made these Thai...
Read moreI am a repeat customer at Chabaar: Beyond Thai Food. It's location is convenient. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere. The food is beyond amazing! And the owner, Anny, is just delightful.
A few menu items that I love: If you love Pho (noodle soup), they have fantastic Pho. The Pad Ki Mao (Drunken Noodle) dish is definitely a favorite. The Kow Soi with it's flavorful curry coconut gravy is amazing. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. There are several menu items that aren't listed on the menu—recommended items by the owner, Anny. Request the pumpkin curry or the Thai eggplant stir-fry, you wont be disappointed.
Pepper belly's beware: Items are spiced on a 0-10 level. However, Annie and her staff are very willing to "talk you down" on your spicy level—on a scale from 0-10 they rarely encourage anyone to go any higher than a 1. Anny says if you demand a 2 and she gives it to you and you can't handle it, she will take your picture and post it on her facebook page and make fun of you. Love her sense of humor!
Have children that wont eat Thai? My niece and nephew, who are a little picky about what they eat, ordered a bacon cheeseburger and fries. When their plates came out, I was impressed with how good their food looked. The kids seemed quite pleased with their dinner.
Finish up your meal with some of Anny's homemade ice cream. The list of flavors varies but the coconut ice cream is by far my favorite. I also recommend the Honey Lavender or Ginger ice cream—they are quite tasty! If you like cheesecake, Anny also makes a pomegranate cheese cake which is to die for!
And while it may seem insignificant, they have the best "after dinner" treat, given out with the restaurant bill. A Guava flavored hard candy not only tastes wonderful but the rich guava fragrance makes you feel like you're on vacation!
Chabaar is, by far, one of my most favorite places to dine! I highly...
