I live in Indiana and visit 3 times a year for a month each time. each of these visits involve at least 2 times to KoKolo. the food is amazing and we love it. We went on the 14th at 7:50pm The door and website both say they close at 9pm. we are hurried through our order and then told they close at 9 . I was like yea but we dont have our food yet. They serve us and then they start closing down the restaurant. They are mopping and putting all the chairs but the ones we were at. This was 5 minutes after 8pm. A couple came in after that and they left. No idea what they tried to order. A woman came in and they told her she could order a salad that the kitchen was closed. This was 15 minutes after 8pm. My son pointed out his usually awesome dish was rancid smelling and chewy and he is also autistic and did not want confrontation so at 8:20 he left. My food was great but still too hot too finish so i packed it to go and my other son finished his up while I went to talk to them. I explained that my one sons food was so bad it smelled bad and they offered to reimburse us for it and we accepted that. mind you I was really nice about all this but the smell of the mopping was bleachy and bothering my asthma and my sons .I did tip 15 percent which I think is fair being its not a sit down serve at table restaurant. But I was shoved out and told it was really slow and they wanted to leave early. and the food was bad for one of us. but they lied and did not reimburse the meal at all . So I went to leave a comment on the contact us.. It didn't work. So i messaged them on facebook and they offered to reimburse my whole meal. I had only asked for the bad meal but was glad they wanted to make it better.. again lie.. no reimbursement. and total ghosts when I try to get a hold of them. I am out 71 dollars. but really I only wanted to 20 dollar meal that was inedible back.. my daughter( who eats there a couple times a month) and rest of my family are bummed now that we will not be eating at a place that i had originally left 5 stars all around for and looked forward to going...
Read moreAfter traveling for a few days, it was refreshing to stumble upon this delightful little restaurant. This was, hands down, the best meal that we have had in several days, if not weeks.
Items ordered with reviews */5:
Una don: 5/5 Perfectly cooked, seasoned, and sauced unagi over perfectly steamed rice. Best unagi ever.
Tempura don: 5/5 Wonderfully cooked Tempura and rice. Crisp and flavorful. Massive portion.
Udon noodles with beef: 5/5 I have never enjoyed an udon dish as much as this. Everything was cooked and sauced to perfection, just amazing, a hit with the whole family. We will be back for this one again. I do wish it was a bit larger of a portion, as it was the family favorite. I could eat this weekly and never grow tired of it.
Gyoza: 3/5 It was good, not perfect, but satisfied our desire.
Miso soup: 3/5 A bit watered down, it could have been a little more flavorful, but still enjoyable.
Edamame: 4/5 Very good, well cooked and salted. It's not the best that we have had, but it's still quite good.
I highly recommend this establishment. Their food quality was an unexpected surprise given that this is a counter serve restaurant. The food is wonderful, the staff is friendly, and the laid-back atmosphere was inviting after a day of...
Read moreThe Food Discovered Kokolo Donburi a while back, but was in the area so decided to give it a try. They have a pretty good selection of dishes, but decided to go with their Gyudon and Jidori Karaage. It is a wagyu beef (rice) bowl with onion. The beef looked a bit lean to be wagyu, but the taste was not bad, wasn't dry, I wish it came with an egg by default. The karaage was also not bad, slight crispiness to it, but not the crunchy style. I am curious about what their katsu dishes are like, so I might return if I get a chance. One thing I noticed is that they also have ice cream, curious on what that is like also.
The Miscellaneous You can find Kokolo Donburi inside a big plaza with a good amount of parking. The interior design of the restaurant is quite interesting. They have different Japanese art (mural?) on their walls. They also have a big space, with a decent amount of seating. The staff and service was good, with reasonable order time. Looking at the name, you can tell the restaurant focuses mainly on dons (rice bowls). But they also have small plate side dishes. The price is reasonable, but I feel with the pricing, the quality could be better. Donburi restaurants are uncommon in the area, so it is a good place to...
