I was excited to try this place because my girlfriend had earlier and told me about it. Now I am not from Lexington, a place well-known for it's barbecue, but it's close enough. The pulled pork sandwich plate and the brisket plate is what we decided to go with. They don't put the sauce in the pork which is fine because not everybody likes vinegar or mustard based sauce, or barbecue sauce. I actually kind of like that idea. So when I got there I had literally a million and one questions about how they prepared certain dishes. They use eggs in their macaroni, so I will not be eating that, much less trying it. (Use a rue, please.) I asked about the potato salad and if it had sweet relish in it, and the cashier or server or unsure. (If it doesn't have sweet relish in it, I'm not eating it, much less trying it.) They have "homemade" banana pudding. I asked if it was cooked or if it was vanilla pudding. If I remember correctly the staff said that it was vanilla pudding. (That is not homemade banana pudding. That is vanilla pudding with bananas in it and vanilla wafers. Real banana pudding requires condensed milk and cooking it on the stove prior to chilling in the refrigerator. That's just my personal opinion.) I asked about the hush puppies and if they were sweet. I was told they were so that was a big win. I saw that they also had red coleslaw. So of course I had to ask was it red cabbage or if it was the kind of coleslaw that has a vinegar-based and red color. I think they might have misunderstood because they did say it wasn't red cabbage but it was vinegar based. When I got it, it was not what I thought it was. It has pimento in it with a vinegar base. I assume that's why they call it red coleslaw. Although it was not what I was used to, it was still actually pretty good. The pulled pork was absolutely delicious and tender. The coleslaw was delicious the hush puppies were out of this world (they are sweet), and the baked beans are absolutely delicious. Moving on to the brisket plate. In all honesty, I feel like that was pot roast. Chuck roast to be exact because of how tough it was. I maybe had about two bites and was done with it. That includes trying to douse it in the sauces that were available. The sauces are really really good however the vinegar base sauce is a bit watery for my taste along with the sweet tomato sauce. Now don't get me wrong they are still delicious, they're just too watery. The regular barbecue sauce is pretty good too. Just kind of sad that they don't have a mustard-based sauce or Alabama white sauce which I've been dying to try. They do support locally owned businesses because there were mini bundt cakes that were available for sale as well as mugs that were made by people in the area. The staff members that I encountered were really sweet as well. Either way, I will go back because I did love the pork and I will try the...
Read moreI am very very fussy about my Bar B Que. It MUST be moist and flavorful before any sauce is added to it. I have always gotten the pork Bar B Que. It is always excellent. The sandwiches are simply stuffed with juicy moist meat. Generally if one orders a barbeque sandwich at a generic ( any place other than the Rock Store barbeque restaurant), the sauce is bad enough to ruin the sandwich. It is not that way at the Rock Store Bar B Que . It took me a few visits before I would trust them enough to allow them to give me a container of sauce . They have 3 kinds of sauce to choose from. They allow you to taste a sample so you may choose if you are unsure. Their mustard sauce is now my favorite . It is given to you in a separate container. There is only 1 negative thing I could ever say about them. Don't waste your time with any of their sugary desserts in the front counter ( these are the ones that you pick out yourself and eat with your hands) . Those desserts are nowhere near the same elite category of which their bar-b-que is in. See 2015 update below:
Major change ! They have now changed their desserts. Their desserts are now super tasty. ...high caliber. But, the high light of the meal is still the BBQ. There is no dessert that can begin to equal the quality of their BBQ. After you've eaten their dinner, any dessert would...
Read moreI tried out this bbq joint for the first time today and was really thrilled with them. For starters, the workers greeted us warmly and didn't rush us with our orders. They were wearing the proper ppe including the mask. Hand sanitizer was accessible for anyone to use and the restaurant was extremely tidy. The atmosphere was really laid back. The food came out instantly, which was greasy, since I was starving. It's been awhile since I've eaten real Carolina BBQ. This was absolutely delicious and pleasing. I decided to get the Brisket Platter. I chose hushpuppies over the bun. My sides were mac and cheese and red slaw. The brisket was absolutely amazing. Not dry like most places I've been. I went with the Sweet Tomato sauce to add to it and it was amazing! I was throughly pleased. The hushpuppies are definitely above average. Soooo good! The mac and cheese was extra cheesy and delicious. I never had red slaw before. If you're used to standard cole slaw, this is definitely different. It's not as sweet. It was quite tasty if you are into a more bitter type of slaw. I was thrilled to see that Cheerwine was a soda option here. Naturally, I got it. The price is great! You definitely get your money's worth worth the platter. I left quite satisfied. If you want good, Carolina BBQ, I highly suggest trying...
