The only thing that prevents me from giving it a perfect 5 is that for over a year they have been advertising fresh orange juice at fresh ok prices but serving concentrated grocery store instead.they told us the machine for extracting fresh is broken.thats probably illegal to say you're serving one thing when you're serving something cheaper but similar. They could stroll on over to Winco and get fresh squeezed in about 20 min.since it's right across the parking lot. Aside from that, their food is generous, tasty, hot, everything you would want in a family style diner. The service is fast very friendly. The dining room is comfortable from seating to air temp, and the restrooms are without fault. The prices are better than expected considering even fast food is way more expensive than previous years. We had breakfasts, and each one was big enough for 3 people...two platters for each person. The country fried steak was almost as big as a dinner plate and served on a big platter with eggs and exceptional red potatoes with bell pepper and onion. We were given lots of napkins, butter, syrup. The menu is varied and we didn't really read it all, but I know there's so much to choose from, you could have a meal or just a snack or dessert or shake. There's bound to be something to suit everyone.
Black Bear is easily one of the very best places to go when you're really hungry and want home style cooking in generous amounts served by someone who likely could be even more hospitable than your family's chief cook.
Our check for two women was under 15 each with lots of leftovers. Just the 2 pancakes that were our chosen side were each bigger than an adult hand and took up almost an entire platter. The portions are simply gigantic. You could share a breakfast with your child.
The parking is right out front and surrounding the building. They sell really nice souvenirs like clothing, stuffed animals and unusually eye catching merchandise. They're located right off the highway and serve breakfast all hours. The employees are nice, but don't expect to get your meal really fast. Maybe it just takes a little longer because it's so good, and there's a lot of it. It's a family restaurant, so I'm sure kids are welcome. We went during off hours, so fortunately it was quiet.
Anyhow, yes we will keep going back and hoping some day the orange juice will be actually fresh squeezed. At least they're friendly, generous, and you leave feeling happy. If you're hungry and want a variety of choices, go...
Read moreWe went there for breakfast, so I can't speak of their lunch and dinner, but I bet it is good, if it is anything like the care they took in preparing our breakfast.
The place is sort of large, but not too big. It is clean and parking is easy. The service is very good. Our server was kind and got our food right the first time and it was all served hot.
It was not crowded when we came so we were seated straight away. We ordered coffee, which was great and looked at the menu,
We ordered the Grizz which is two sweet cream pancakes with 3 eggs, which I love. I am always in need of more eggs. It also came with two slices of thick-cut smoked bacon, 2 sausage links and a good sized smoked ham steak. I had to share that. It was a lot of food. It was all perfect.
We also tried the Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak with eggs. It was so great and heart attack ready if you ate that everyday. I might be able to manage it. I loved it. It was 10 oz of tender beef, breaded then deep fried and smothered in enough country gravy for dipping the great biscuits with which it comes. The biscuits are home made and amazing. It also comes with eggs. You really do have to share this as it is a lot of food. We took a little back to our hotel and it was gone in minutes,
The New York steak and eggs is cooked to order just the way you want it, and I always want my meat rare. It is just wonderful. The steak was tender and it came with those wonderful biscuits and eggs.
We were just so pleased. We had no room for lunch later so we skipped it.
The food is the best, the service wonderful and...
Read moreYesterday my family and I tried to get a table to celebrate my son's graduation. We arrived at 9:10pm and stood waiting to get helped for about 18 minutes. The restaurant looked empty and like only one server was working the whole restaurant. At 9:28pm, a person in red shirt came up to me and said "just so you know, we close at 10pm". I said "we have been standing here to get acknowledged for 15+ minutes". Then she said "well, its just me and one server here", then she walked off without saying anything else. When the server finally came and talked to us I asked if the other lady was the manager and what was her name, she said yes and her name is Brizzy. The restaurant had only a couple people in there and did not look busy eventhough it was graduation night. Regardless of how understaffed or how 'busy' you are, you don't talk to Customers that way. She could have been nice about it say something like "hello, Im sorry, but due to closing in less than 45 minutes, we wont be able to accomodate your party". Its all about the way you talk to people, I could have understood that, but no instead I get a very rude lady treating my family and I like we are nothing and felt as an unvalued Customer. Well that is the last time I will go to that restaurant in the Modesto location. I rather drive to another city if I ever want black bear.
Not to mention every other time we have went they are always out of something in their menu and the service...
