Alfredo's Cantina — Restaurant in Monterey

I wish I would have read the reviews before going. That was my mistake.

It was my mom’s birthday so we thought we’d get a drink before heading back to the hotel. We found somewhere to sit and I walked over to the bar. I bartended when I was younger so I understand that sometimes you can be very busy and have to move fast, I saw that the bartender was making drinks, so I just said “hi, can I get some drinks from you when you’re finished?” He didn’t look up and said “mhm” in agreement. The older gentleman sitting next to me at the bar, recommended that I ask the guy again but louder this time, since he also notice how dismissive the bartender was. So I thanked him for the advice and said, a bit louder, “I believe he’s just waiting to finish up to help me out”. This time he did look up at me and proceeded to finish the drinks at an even slower rate than before. The older gentlemen saw this and said “hey! Make sure you help out this young lady when you’re done”. They bartender looked up at him and said “yeah”. I thanked the older gentleman and continued to wait. Meanwhile there is a total of two bartenders and the other one is just leaning on the bar talking to a group of guys, the entire time, not making any drinks. Once the first bartender was done with the drinks he was prepping, he began to walk to the opposite side of the bar, this was the fastest I ever saw him move the entire time. This was when the older gentleman, raised his voice and said “hey? Get her whatever she needs” so he walked back and finally asked for my order. He was not happy about it, when I would say thank you, once he took my order, handed me my drinks, or took my money, he was just silent. I did tip him, because that’s just good bar etiquette for me, even though his etiquette was nonexistent.

The bartender behaved unprofessionally, preventing patrons from having conversations and enjoying themselves. Our group was effectively pushed out due to what appeared to be his personal resentment. To make matters worse, he refused to let us back in to retrieve a sweater that had been left behind—a sentimental item with personal value—and even locked the back door to prevent any attempt to recover it.

When we returned the next day to retrieve the sweater, we spoke with the bartender and confronted him about his rude and unprofessional treatment of our group. He offered no reasonable justification for his rash behavior and continued to display a dismissive and...

After 7 years of traveling the world, this prompted me to leave my first review ever. This bar refused service to me (a white passing POC$) because I was with 4 other people of color. I was let in as a solo person, only to see my 3 friends left outside. I went to join them, and was told me and my friends were too drunk to enter, despite me being let in beforehand. Please avoid this racist bar!!!! Once again, I’ve partied and drank and the top bars across the most popular cities across 10+ countries and never felt as much discrimination as this bar.
