Petra Cafe — Restaurant in Monterey

We checked in at the Golden State Theater early, so we looked for a quick meal before the show and Petra is just a few doors down. I've eaten here before, but this night reminded me why I go. Food is delicious and the service is attentive and kind. One of my beefs with other local Mediterranean food is that the meats can be so dry, leaving me desperate for a sauce or something, anything. Here, the gyro and the kafta are not even a little dry, and my kafta sandwich was dressed with a lovely tahini sauce that brought everything together. At Petra a sandwich means a wrap on pita bread, and the combo comes with fries or salad and a drink. My salad was topped with cucumber, kalamata olives, red onion and a big hunk of feta cheese, vinaigrette served on the side. My dining companion's fries were hot and crisp. Definitely recommend this little spot! They even set me up with a bottle of sriracha that I have a bad habit of dousing...

Came to Petra for the first time with some friends on a trip to Monterey and fell in LOVE immediately! I live in Los Angeles and come to Monterey SPECIFICALLY for the food at Petra! I have cravings for their flavorful and tender kofta and gyro meat made in house with lots of love and expertise.

A MUST for anyone visiting the adorable downtown area! A small hole in the wall, easy to miss when cruising down Alvarado St, but an absolute local gem!

The owner is kind and friendly and really knows his stuff!

Absolutely delicious gyros and Mediterrainian dishes, combined with the most hospitable owner and host of this venue makes Petra Cafe a must visit if you want to support small local business owners! The owner (I think his name was Sam) is from Jordania decent if I remember correctly, and he proudly will share his passion for his country of origin, as well as welcome you into his life as a proud american.
