I had an early lunch break, so I thought it would be worth checking out D'Road Cafe, whose breakfast-lunch hours fit well into my schedule. Also, they were serving stewed rabbit that day, which I wanted to try.
I walk in a 10:30 and Janet doesn't look ready to serve me stewed rabbit, nor much else for the lunch service. Her small hot bar is empty, and she admits she got started a bit late today. Aside from a little help that pops in and out, she's basically the whole operation, so the whole operation got started a little late today. Among a wave of apologies, we place ourselves in her hands and wait for her to get everything together.
Ten minutes later, she presents us with a plate of sauteed cabbage and zucchini, some rice, and a few thick slices of a heavily seasoned, fork tender, and admittedly quite dry roast (probably more like braised) beef. The tomato-based sauce in which it was served helped, but there wasn't enough.
Still, we ate it up and thanked her kindly, because this clearly isn't a restaurant that exists to make maximum profit against a consumer. Janet wants to share her cooking with Montgomery, and while her pan-Venezuelan cuisine might be hard to nail down, the atmosphere is exactly what you might expect if you were to walk into someone's home and they cooked you a meal - you eat it and thank them profusely, ignoring any specific flaws in the meal because you know it came...
Read moreIf zero was possible I would give them zero. We visited Montgomery for a day and wanted a cup of coffee and a light lunch. This place serves food from cafeteria style trays which has been sitting for God only knows how long congealing in its grease. We took no food particularly being diabetic nothing was acceptable. The lady would not take no for an answer and kept trying to force this grease laden slop on me. I ordered coffee and my wife ordered ice tea. Both were undrinkable. I have traveled the world and drank coffee on many continents but this was undrinkable, it was old and burned. My wife was also unable to drink her tea it was heavily flavored with sour lime. My burnt coffee was served with just a half of cup. We brought both drinks up to the counter undrunk and were told this is how they make it. Then she tried to charge us $.50 more than the advertised price. Listen Montgomery this how they were treating visitors to your city. We loved Montgomery and even bought a t-shirt to promote the city, this restaurant is a disgrace and insult to...
Read moreWe normally like to try and support new places, especially family owned establishments, but I can't recommend D'Road Cafe. There was one group (approx 12 people) in the restaurant when we arrived. Menu was very limited and quite pricey for what you get. Coffee was bad....it was just bad....and you had to get your own refills. It took almost an hour to get our meals, keep on mind this was at breakfast time, and we ordered a 3rd meal to split due to the relatively small sizes. Food was okay, lacked good flavor and wasn't anything to write home about. The ventilation is COMPLETELY inadequate and the dining room was visibly filled with smoke from the kitchen almost the entire time. By the time we left we smelled like we had just left Waffle House. Our bill was comp'd, so I have to say the owner, who is very nice, was attentive. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend D'Road and we...
