This may be, hands down, the best dive bar I've ever been to. It was my dad's favorite when he was in school there in the 60s and now I know why. The bartenders were GREAT! The owner, Al, couldn't have been any more friendly. All the locals were welcoming. The beer selection was great. The chili dogs were awesome. The prices can't be beat! The band was very good. I was there with four friends and they all agree that it's a great place. We didn't even bother to go anyplace else while we were in town.

Our visit to Geneā€™s a few weeks ago was great fun. Our mission was to buy a hat after seeing John R Miller wearing their hat at a concert a few years ago. So we drove from Michigan in pursuit of a Geneā€™s hat. We also got this cool drawing. Staff and patrons were a blast ā€¦ and the beer and hot dogs were great. Such a fun experience at this treasure in Morgantown!

Geneā€™s has been there for me and my Dad for forty years, and weā€™re not through counting. If there were such a thing as ā€œstreet tennis,ā€ Dad and I slugged it out - on cracked, weedy courts that have long gone the way of the old WVU Stadium. At 18, heā€™d quaff a quenching beer while I high-dived into ice water, and we wolverined the iconic cheese plate(s) after the brawl. In college, I went with Shakespeareans, and German conversationalists - and Dad. In law school, I went with law students, and law books - and Dad. In law practice, I still go - with Dad. At 88 and 57, Dad and I remain regulars, link up with old friends and have made many new friends, while we reminisce on how we played on ā€˜grassā€™ courts. Always, we are recognized with hugs and sincere camaraderie. It isnā€™t just the service at Geneā€™s, itā€™s the everlasting friendship. Thank you, Ms Lucy and all...

Today Tony and I stopped at Gene's Place or Gene's Beer Garden on Wilson Street in Morgantown WV. This neighborhood bar & grill has been around since 1944 in a older historical part of town called Greenmont. The bar is our type of place...a neighborhood hangout a really great walk into the past...a dive bar!!! The people were really friendly! We grabbed a old fashion wooden booth in the back. Tony ordered a PBR and I got a tea! We both got a Hot Dog. Mine was Chili, Slaw & Onions!!! Tony had Chili, Onions & Cheese!!! The Hot Dogs were very good!!! I loved the sauce or chili as I call it. Not a fan of the slaw, it was store bought not homemade. But it was a good Dog!! NOT THE BEST I EVER HAD, But in the top 20!! I would definitely go here just for the atmosphere and...

Being a "Townie", I've finally made my way to Greenmont and stepped foot into Gene's after 10 years of living in Morgantown.. Total dive bar vibes. It feels more like a regular neighborhood hangout. Most of the crowd are in their 40s and 50s. Then some elderly too. We enjoyed a hotdog and a cold beer. The WV slaw dog was.. Different. Maybe old bay in the coleslaw? It was ONLY $9 for both of us! It's cheap! And the bartender was super nice and attentive.

But.. I'm not one to frequent bars. If you like watching sports and focusing on the TV with all your friends... THIS is the place for you! (not...
