Overall 9/10. Woah that’s high! Ok hear me out. Your Chinese friends probably tell you “that place is too expensive”, “not worth the price”, and I agree. I tell my friends the same. So why 9/10, because it’s the best Chinese restaurant you’ll find in rtp, no forget it, in NC, and until someone opens one better for cheaper, this score is gonna stay. I do not recommend take out, the food doesn’t taste as good, and you don’t get the experience. If you want a special occasion, or you’ve never really had authentic Chinese food and want the experience, you’re not too fussed about an expensive restaurant, then you should come here, just once, to get an idea of what Chinese food should be compared to your regular cheap takeouts or god forbid “panda express”. The staff and overall environment is what you’d expect of a restaurant of this price range. You come here for the service and to be surrounded by “class and culture”. Since this is a food review, my review scores below will not consider their price. As a group of 5, we spent around $100 per person. Possibly one of the most expensive restaurants in NC.
Food: Meatball soup 8.5/10. It tasted good, very authentic flavour. Light, refreshing, wholesome soup, not the overly seasoned stuff. This is the flavour I expect if I had a meatball soup cooked by grandma. But you only get one meatball and the rest is clear liquid soup, not generous (otherwise I’d give it a 9), but you’re here for the experience. Gold and silver buns - 8.5/10, some of the best in the state. The white buns and creamy and soft like a cloud. The golden buns are crisp and lightly fried, gives you that light crunch and a soft airy centre. The flavour is as it should be, and comes with a suitably sweet dip, this is the stuff you expect to have whilst in china, of course, the cost is a different story. Beijing duck (peking duck) -9/10. Authentically made, and authentic taste. The duck had a golden, crispy skin on the outside, and the meat inside was tender and somewhat juicy. The duck pancake was perfectly thin, and did not tear. My only real complaint is that the duck sauce was not “sweet enough”. Is it as good as the top duck restaurants in Beijing? No, but that’s not fair. Is it authentic? Yes, and the best in NC. If you’ve never had real Beijing duck, short of going out of the country, come here to see what it’s supposed to be like. I’m giving this a 9 because it’s in the US. Put this in Beijing and I’d still give it a very good 7/10 where the absolute best restaurants (in the world) would get 9s Szechuan spicy fish filet - 8.5/10. I have a soft spot for Sichuan dishes because ancestral wise, that’s where I’m from, but that also means I’m VERY PICKY. We ordered the garlic version for fear of my western colleagues not being able to handle the spice. The taste was very good and authentic. Really gave off the authentic vibes. Fillet was soft and tender, literally melted in your mouth. The spices were well balanced and overall just a very well balanced centre dish with lots of protein. Best Sichuan spicy fish fillet I’ve had in the US so far. I’m sure there’s better, just haven’t got there yet!
Environment- 9/10. Friendly staff, very professional. Decor was a fusion of high end western restaurant + traditional Chinese art and design. You come here for the experience
Price - 3/10. It’s expensive for what it is, and if you know the right places, you’ll find cheaper restaurants that can rival some of its dishes in various aspects. But given the location of NC and what’s available in terms of Asian cuisine, this is as good as it gets. So if you are willing to not care about the price for one meal for the sake of enjoying some authentic Chinese food in a nice environment, have I got a...
Read moreWe went a couple nights ago for my birthday. It was my first time here. We did not have a reservation, but they sat us quickly at a bar table. It was just after they opened at 5pm so no one was there yet. The dining room was empty, except for one table. Audrey was our waitress and she was very nice. She even brought me a mini red velvet cake with a candle to celebrate my birthday. The food was amazing- atleast what we were able to try ( which wasn’t much).
I do have some serious complaints though. The first complaint is that all the prices are listed on Google and the company website except the dinners and because there was no prices on anything on the web It was a bit shocking at how expensive it was. Their steak was $100!! And just their veggie fried rice was $25! It would have been nice to see the price ahead of time bc we probably would have gone somewhere else if we had been able to see the menu prices. But it was my birthday so in for a penny in for a pound as they say. We ordered the soup buns and the citrus shrimp to share bc We weren’t really prepared to pay for two entrées. Audrey assured us the portions were large enough to share But when the shrimp arrived, there were only seven. There was an extra shell of one so it looked like there was probably eight at one time, but maybe one fell out of the shell. Or didn’t make it to the plate for whatever reason. It was just an empty shell and that was disappointing. So For $42 I got three shrimp and an empty shell and my husband got 4. The dish was delicious, and the shells of the shrimp were crispy but the price was just out of this world for the quantity. And one of my three shrimp was a little overcooked but the rest were fine. It wouldn’t have mattered had I had more than three. But the dish was still amazing nevertheless! We also got 4 soup buns for $15 and they were great. Definitely try them if you come here. I guess we were the only people who really couldn’t afford it because the dining room was packed by 6pm. Not a single open table. It was the day after Christmas so people may have been still celebrating; and as so there was crappy pop Christmas music blasting from the speakers. Which wasn’t very befitting of fine dining but it’s Christmas so I’ll give them a pass. And they sat us by the window, which was incredibly cold the entire time. The floor to ceiling glass window overlooked the koi pond so it was lovely to look at but so cold. But we didn’t have a reservation so I understand. I was just happy to get a table (I have the lousiest date of birth ever).
Even in spite of this, The food was so good I’d probably go again, but I’d be prepared to spend a couple hundred dollars or just order appetizers. I think we just had a bit of sticker shock and were disappointed by the size of the portion and that was mainly bc we were sharing it. The service was good even though she did let my husbands water run out. Which is a fine dining no-no. And she served us tap water to drink which I thought was crazy( I know it was tapwater because she asked me if I want bottled water mineral water or “would tap be okay?”) as much as that food costs, I feel like they could atleast afford to put a filter on the drinking water. So overall I wasn’t very happy. But Audrey saved the night it with her awesome personality and the free cake at the end. And again, the food was just ridiculously delicious.
BTW We made a YouTube video of our experience and I will be putting it up asap. I will edit this review with the link when I do but you can find our channel at THE ADVENTURES OF DREW AND AMANDA in the meantime.

Read moreI recently took a corporate group of 11 to G58 to celebrate the department’s recent success in October. We started at the bar, seated at tables which is where the lack of service began. No one ever came to take a drink order so each person had to go to the bar to order a drink. We were one of two groups at the bar. Perhaps not a big deal, but something I would expect in a restaurant with $40 entrees. When we moved to our table, instead of one large table for 11, we had two separate tables of six so we became two separate groups instead of one. The restaurant had three groups dining last night so there were plenty of options to sit at one table as one large group. We ordered two Peking ducks ahead of time. One table received their duck, wraps, sauces and sides at once; our table received the duck and the wraps, no sauces and no sides. Once the duck started getting cold, we decided to eat the duck without the sauces and sides. Once we were almost finished, the sauces showed up. Then later, the sides. The second Peking duck didn’t show up so we questioned the staff about it. The waitress informed us that we did receive both ducks, sliced and distributed between two platters. It was obvious that the portions were not that of two ducks so we asked again and the manager told us that the waitress was mistaken, we only received one duck. By the time it was figured out, we were done with our appetizers alltogether. We cancelled the second duck. For pecking duck and at the price charged, we expected a table-side delivery and slicing but we instead were served platters of pre-sliced duck from the kitchen. Again, not a huge deal but the experience worsened from here. We ordered our meals and were then told that of the seven short rib orders, the restaurant could only accommodate five orders so two of our diners had to change their entrees. When the entrees arrived, a server would come out with one dish at a time and ask who’s dish it was...so the waiter never took note of who ordered what and how it was to be distributed. The first two entrees were shrimp dishes with fried rice. They delivered steamed rice. Eventually a third dish came out, then slowly a fourth, fifth...each time with a server asking, who got the sea bass, who got the scallops. Definitely not what was to be expected of a fine dining establishment. The diners that were served first wanted to wait for others to be served before eating so they waited, and waited for their side orders to be corrected. Eventually, they were encouraged to go ahead and eat before their food got cold. Then, the two diners that changed their short rib order were brought short ribs. This is when the confusion really began as everyone realized that seven people didn’t order short ribs as the waiter had stated; there was enough short rib for everyone that ordered. Then, the new entrees that were ordered to replace the short rib order arrived as well. At this point, some of our party was finished with their meal while others were just being served their entree. The manager continued to apologize and eventually offered free desert to make up for a bad experience. I pulled the manager aside and let him know of our dissatisfaction, that we were ready to call it a night and that in lieu of dessert to just provide a discount on our ticket. When the bill arrived, there was a mandated tip and a discount of $100. Overall, the food was well prepared and potentially worth the high price. Where the restaurant falls critically short is in their service. G58 might be fine cuisine, but it is definitely not fine dining. I cannot recommend this restaurant. Corporate...
