Straight Wharf Fish — Restaurant in Nantucket

This was my first visit to Straight Wharf Fish. It was partially great, and partially okay. Highlights were the service and atmosphere. Obviously, being right on the dock was great and we had a fresh breeze the whole evening. Service was attentive and fast. Generally, the food and drinks were okay. My cold-brew martini was lackluster. The coffee was weak, and there also wasn’t much alcohol in it. For $16, I was disappointed. The local oysters (pictured) were excellent, and were the cleanest oysters I’ve ever had. The cornbread was also well done with a sweet butter. I ordered the tuna burger as my entree. I expected a piece of seared tuna on a bun, as I have received before when ordering a tuna burger. This, however, was unseasoned ground tuna. I wouldn’t have ordered it if the menu clarified that it was ground tuna (it didn’t), and I would not order it again. The other strange disappointment was the onion rings, which were over-battered and absolutely drenched in oil. Location and ascetics inside are great but the food is not good. We had a group of 5 and everyone single one of us was disappointed with the meal. The tuna burger is not seared tuna inside a bun as it is at other places on island but rather ground up tuna shaped into a patty and when you bite into it crumbles and is a mess. It’s covered in so much sauce it pours out as you eat it and not in a good way - it was ridiculous and completely covers any taste of anything else. The shrimp salad had more dressing on it than I’ve seen any salad to the point when you finished the salad there was so much dressing in the bottom of the bowl it looks like I had a soup - It was actually gross. The onion rings had so much batter on them you wouldn’t know anything was inside and they were dripping with oil as you picked them up. Cocktails are all pre batched so nothing made on site. For over $300 USD I would not recommend this restaurant based on the level of food we had and the number of options on the island. Overall really disappointing which is such a shame. ...

We loved our experience. Luka’s service was exceptional. It was the best on the island, including high-end formal places. He anticipated every need, checked back regularly, and made each table feel like they were the most important in the Restaurant. He was also personal, asking everyone where they were from and briefly sharing his interesting background. We took all his recommendations when ordering and it was perfect. In addition the front desk host, Lily, was kind and patient for a restaurant that doesn't take reservations. She explained the process and was welcoming and friendly vs aloof like some other hard-to-get-in establishments. Loved the food!! Wow!! You must get the onion rings with caviar. Even if you eat healthy all the time. The kale salad with salmon, amazing. Finally the fish tacos perfectly prepared and so fresh. Loved the food, but the service was the best on the island.
