Our Server was the only good part.
I used to love the Root Cellar. It had a sophisticated, change with the seasons menu, and the breakfast-for-dinner option was amazing. But since it was sold to new ownership, it just hasn't been worth going to. What used to feel like a nice, date night experience has become more like going to TGIF or Chili's š. And yes this applies to both locations.
We decided to try the New Braunfels location after being disappointed one too many times at the San Marcos location. It was not great...
We got there on time for our reservations and were seated quickly. Our Server was amazing and even brought the kids fruit to keep them happy until the food came. The evening was off to a decent start even if the loudness of the restaurant made it very hard to hear anyone talking.
Our first appetizer, brussels sprouts, came fairly quickly but they forgot to bring the second one, chips and salsa, until I asked. The sprouts were cooked beautifully and were delicious. Several ppl also got tomato basil soup and it was also really good.
Then everything went very downhill. I guess the restaurant didn't plan on a 10-top, so we waited over an hour for our food. Mind you, our reservation was for 5:30 on a THURSDAY! Most of the tables were not seated, it was not crowded, and walk-ins were seated without a wait. Still, our food didn't arrive until after 7:30pm. Worse, most of the food was cold when it got to the table. It was a real letdown to eat clearly cooled-down food after being told repeatedly that the kitchen was slammed bc of the 10-top. It's disappointing that a restaurant couldn't handle one large table, our 6-top, and a couple of small tables.
Even if the food hadn't been cold, it wouldn't have been great. The chicken was overcooked and a bit rubbery in places, the sides were basic, and, honestly, we usually have better seasoning at home. I didn't even bother to bring my leftovers home. No one did. The kids did like the kids' meals, but the baby was so tired he was nodding off by the time the food came (to be fair, he basically drank the salsa).
Our server tried her best to salvage the experience. She brought us a free salad to share during our long wait and she took off a bit of the tab for the cold food. She was attentive and did things to help without us even asking.
So I guess if you want a great server, a loud atmosphere, ok food, higher prices, and a kitchen that can't handle the smallest of crowds- go here. I don't plan to go...

We had the most incredible experience at this restaurant (Sunday brunch) ā one that will stick with us for a long time, not just because of the food (which was phenomenal), but because of the exceptional kindness and service we received from start to finish.
It was a super rainy day, and just as we were walking in, our three-year-old got completely drenched. Before we could even get settled, the staff noticed and immediately stepped in. Fonda (the manager) brought us warm towels and even a hot chocolate for our little girl to help her warm up ā such an unexpected and thoughtful gesture. It honestly meant so much.
Our server, Kenley, was equally amazing ā kind, attentive, and incredibly welcoming. Multiple members of the staff checked in on us throughout the meal and made us feel truly cared for.
Another sweet moment: a different server came by and handed our one-year-old son a little toy car to play with while we ate. It was such a small gesture, but so helpful ā and just one more example of how thoughtful and family-friendly this place is.
And the food? Absolutely DELICIOUS!!! The kids devoured their eggs, potatoes, and fruit. I had the avocado toast, and it was hands down the best Iāve ever had ā fresh, flavorful, and perfectly done. My husband had the Chilaquiles and he couldnāt stop talking about how good it was. Topped it all with french toast to share - SO YUMMY!!!!!
When incredible food is paired with genuine, heartfelt service like this, it creates something really special. Huge thank you to Kenleyn, Fonda, and the entire team for going so far above and beyond. We will absolutely be back ā and weāll be telling everyone we know to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOkay so this an update... We went for Breakfast and as the waitress said "It's a while different monster" I had the Brazilian French toast (with the house whip cream). It was so good I put the whip cream on the toast and didn't even need syrup. This is AMAZING. I've never had French Toast this good. It's hard to not want to go here everyday now.
New favorite restaurant. So I just found out about this place last Saturday afternoon. We went and had lunch there. Wow! I have the Caribbean stacker sandwich which is kind of like a club but made with like Thanksgiving, turkey, leftovers, thick slices to where you're biting into the most amazing sandwich. We can taste every different ingredient included. I got it without the onions but I'm sure if you like onions it would be great. It's cutting into four pieces and I couldn't even eat the last piece. It was that filling. My husband got the BYO burger with a gluten-free bun and he was overjoyed with how good this tasted. Both the kids just got fruit cups which were these huge pastry bowls filled with awesome fruit. But we also had the whole table share the crunchy brussel sprouts. Oh my gosh, I had him put the Sriracha meal on the side just in case we didn't like it. Most amazing mixture! I never would have thought to put that together but it is so good. They have the real sugar sodas which tasted awesome but they also had this hibiscus mint honey tea. I was really pretty good too. The prices are pretty reasonable also. This is definitely someplace. We'll be going back to you, especially when we just found out they serve breakfast and we've been looking for a good breakfast place to go to. They also have a bar with lots of...
