Tin Top Burger Shop — Restaurant in New Braunfels

I don't live in the area anymore, but on a trip from San Antonio to the outlets in San Marcos, my mother and I made a stop here. We went a back way, which made getting there confusing, but once we were there, it was so obvious it was easy to get to. Their selection is great, just a good ol' smash burger with the toppings you want. I had the Down The Hatch, and, being a resident of AZ, I'm not unaquainted with hatch chilies on my burger. What I wasn't expecting was a green chili with some actual kick to it. Most of the hatch chilis you get at any chain restaurant are somehow toned down a few thousand scoville units. I've had hot hatch chilies quite frequently, I'm not new to it, but I didn't expect this little craft kitchen to give me a proper one. The heat was pleasant, not overpowering, and the rest of the burger was perfect. My mother went a bit simpler with a classic, which gave us a surprise, house made pickles, and house made mustard! And it was delightful. I was tempted to buy some and would have if I had a checked bag on my flight home. We shared a side of onion rings, which were fantastic, I'd rate them amongst the best, and a craft soda to top it off! And a delicious smelling ice cream and cookie shop attached was the icing on top. The place is adorable, and the atmosphere feels like a proper Texas country welcome. Stopped in at Tin Top for the first time last week. My wife and I were craving a burger and we wanted to try something new. In a land of great burgers, this place did not disappoint. We liked the place the moment we walked in the door. The decor is fresh and not overdone. It's very clean. It's not super big, but there are a couple of tables that would allow a large family of 5 or 6. They also have additional outdoor seating with some small tables and picnic table benches. This is true casual dining. They have several types of specialty burgers. My wife went with the "Down the Hatch" (pictured) which I didn't think sounded good, but I have to admit...I took a bite and it was delicious. The chilies, onion and bacon together was so good. I went the classic bacon cheeseburger. It came with all the fixins and served on a soft bun. The meat tasted fresh, it was juicy and it has a ton of flavor. I loved it. All sides are al la carte. I went with the tots (they were crispy and not mushy inside...very good) My wife had the onion rings, which I thought were so tasty. I love that they were not overly breaded. I kinda wish I had gone with those. I would say 2 people could share an order if they wanted. They offered a great selection of beers as well as soda and tea. I have heard so much about this place that we decided to try tonight, a Wednesday night around 7:30 ish. About 4-5 people ahead of us. As we waited, the lines lightened up but the wait for our order seemed way too long. At 40 minutes, I checked on our order of 3 burgers and 2 sides. I was told it was next then, nope it was still going to be a while. At 50 minutes my son checked as I needed to head to work. He was told it was next but then no, it would still be a while. I finally ran out of time and patience and apologized that I needed a refund as I needed to leave. I was told my order was just about ready and I was asked if they could wrap it up to go. I said no thanks, that I would just like to get a refund. The young lady apologized and said she would just give it to me in boxes. I explained that I didn't want it to go, that I had wanted to eat it there with the other family I had come with. Their order had also not come out. The young man brought it to me boxes and I just gave up getting a refund and took it. I live 45 minutes away so my kids said everything was cold but good. Sorry that we won't be back. Be aware of long wait. And why have two tip jars plus ask to add a tip for ordering at the counter where I have to pick up my own food where I have to wait a very long time. I wish I could have taken this...
