I am shocked that the service my family received from Bittersweet Confections was so awful because the Google reviews were excellent. I bought and paid over 80$s for a birthday cake that was never provided. I live in North Carolina and my son, his wife and daughter live in NOLA. I ordered their signature cake for my daughter n law's birthday 5/20/2022, received a receipt and sent the receipt to my son, Nathanial Zimet to pick the cake up on 5/27/2022. Order number 412271324 Bittersweet confections accepted my payment and I received no further communications from them. On May 27th my daughter n law, son and granddaughter age 4 waited in the car, went in to pick up the cake. She was told that there was no record of a cake being ordered. She went to the car and my son, Nathanial came in with the receipt. Nathanial was asked to wait 10 minutes, which he refused because his wife and 4 year old daughter were waiting in the car. Nathanial was then told, by whom he assumed was the manager who never provided his name, that they weren't certain it there was a computer or human error. He continued to deflect without apologizing. Nathanial told him that he was also in the service industry, and the first step should have been to apologize, accepting responsibility for their mistake, and then trying to determine what the bakery can do to rectify the situation. The worker hardly apologized, and then asked when we needed the cake by. Nathanial said "Now," to which he replied, "When, exactly?" Once again, Nathanial said he wanted it now, and that they were planning on eating it when they got home. Nathanial told him that they were going to leave, and the worker was going to sort out the issue, and deliver a cake to their house, which he agreed to do. As Nathanial and his family were driving back, they got a call saying that the only cake they would be able to provide would be a frozen cake, that would take hours to defrost. They declined, and asked for our money back. No money has been returned and no further communication has been received by me, in North Carolina, nor by my son, Nathanial Zimet in...
Read moreWe were visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras weekend and was looking for a bite to eat for breakfast before the parade festivities. The front desk attendant at the hotel referred us to this restaurant. She said that the food was really great and inexpensive. I asked her about a restaurant called Mother's that I had heard so much about. She told me that I wouldn't want to eat at Mother's because the food is overrated and the prices are very expensive. She then went on to state that their claim to fame was only due to the singer Beyonce previously eating at the restaurant. We decided to try Bittersweet Confections.
The staff was rather rude when we arrived. I just simply wanted a Veggie omelet, however I couldn't find one on the menu. I settled for some sort of scramble that they offered with a mimosas. My husband ordered the Big Easy breakfast and an orange juice. The food came to $39 some change. They gave us our drinks and a number card. We had a seat right across from the register.
We waited for over 35 minutes for our breakfast! That is saying a lot because let's be clear; The restaurant/bakery is very small and there was barely anyone there. I finally got up and went to the counter in outrage because a couple who had only came in 10 minutes before I approach the counter the 2nd time was being served their breakfast. I requested my money back. The cashier and I assume the manager said that they didn't understand what the issue was and that the thought we had already been served. That was completely absurd seeing as though we were sitting right across from the cashier and it was obvious we weren't eating! They gave me back $26 some change along with an apology. This is the amount minus our drinks. We then decided to go to Mother's.
Bottom line: I would never recommend this restaurant nor...
Read moreLife has its bittersweet moments, and I’ve found one of the sweetest right here on Magazine Street. I’m in New Orleans for medical treatment for the next several months, and while my journey hasn’t been the easiest, I’ve discovered that kindness can be as comforting as chocolate.
A few dear friends ordered a dozen cupcakes from Bittersweet Confections, and when one of the owners, Cheryl, heard I was sick, she personally added me to their delivery route, just because. I can’t promise that kind of door to door service for everyone (I happened to live a few blocks away), but the gesture itself meant more than words can say.
I opted to pick them up and eventually, I ventured out for some fresh air and walked to the shop myself. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel like a regular. Jake and Grace treated me (and everyone else) with genuine Southern hospitality. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in every cup of coffee and crumb of cake.
Now, technically, sweets are off limits for me right now but let’s just say resistance crumbled after one look at their cupcakes. I took a few bites of the Red Velvet and chocolate with a coconut frosting, and they were so good. The rest I shared with my nurses, who agreed that Bittersweet’s confections are pure medicine for the soul.
For now, I’m savoring the occasional breakfast and the comforting smiles that come with it. When I finish my treatment, you can bet I’ll be celebrating here one perfectly sweet bite at a time.
Bittersweet Confections is more than a bakery, it’s a reminder that kindness and connection are the sweetest...
