I finally took my chi's to the Black Penny bar and Restaurant, across the street from the L Armstrong Park. We always walk them down there in the evenings and I have been wanting to go and check out the Black Penny! We ordered a couple of Abita Strawberry and PorplP Haze Lagers and proceeded to the outside tables..as there were customers ordering food right next to us at the bar and didn't want to make them uncomfortable with the pups right there. We enjoyed sitting outside at the tables and my youngest Chi, Bitsy, 7 months old, has never met a stranger, and just loves everyone, she loves life!!! She was born hyperactive with a 'joi de vieve' like I've never seen in any pup I've ever had!! Everyone was stopping to play with and pet her, while my other Chi, Bella, 5 yrs old, mostly sat on my lap, she's a rescue and hasn't really ever been socialized... The guy sitting next to me took over holding and playing with Bitsy.. We really enjoyed the visit and the bartender seemed very efficient and he was super polite and attentive...I'm sure we will go back to our little " neighborhood hangout", although I'm sure thar many 'out of towners' go there also, and I've heard that their...
Read moreOrdinarily I don't do cans when I go out, but the carefully curated craft beer menu at this place is hard to pass up. And when you're done with your can it gets crushed, put in a bit, and according to the bartender handed over to a local guy in need who takes the cans to a recycling center and pockets the cash. Which is kinda cool, imo.
The bar itself has great atmosphere-- it's welcoming but also effortlessly cool, with a strong 'dive' vibe but for adults. It's a nice break from the looming threat of tetanus and the touristy kitsch you see on Bourbon Street.
When I arrived close to midnight on an unseasonably cold Sunday at the tail end of a holiday weekend, they were blasting metal but about an hour later we were deep in the Britpop new wave. The guys who work there are lovely-- full of great insights and stories about the area and the bar itself. Definitely worth a visit and on my list for my...
Read moreHere for a pop-up Vietnamese Style Crawfish Event; we journeyed in to wait for the crawfish order to be ready. Basic bar, with seemingly familiar to the place 'bar flys' as I know this is a frequent stop during Mardi Gras Festivities.
The crowd here on a Thursday night was plentiful, idk if that was because of the Crawfish or if this was the norm; either way, we blended in and enjoyed the night.
Bartenders were friendly as were the patrons. Indoors there were 4-5 table & seating areas for you to cop-a-squat and be a lookie-lou or enjoy your company, whatever your pleasure.
Lots of eclectic decor to feast your eyes on. Quite dimly lit, but it helps to set the mood though.
Drink prices were fair & the drinks were tasty as well.
I'm not a fan of game hunting and my hope is that the BEAUTIFULLY DECORATED RHINO HEAD on the wall near the...
