Visiting NOLA for the first time and heard tons of great things about Mr. B from coworkers and Yelp reviews. Definitely lived up to the hype. The BBQ shrimp sauce and crabcake were to die for. I will definitely be coming back if I visit again!
Food I had the opportunity to try a lot of different appetizers since I came with my coworkers and also the barbecued shrimp. There seem to be a lot of mixed reviews on the BBQ shrimp but I think that this dish is a MUST TRY. The shrimp are HUGE compared to shrimp that I have eaten elsewhere. They come out with the head and shell on so you have to take it off yourself and it can get very messy (you get a bib that the staff ties on for you though!). If you do not like getting your hands dirty then this is not the entree for you. But if you can get past all the work then you are in for a treat. The sauce is very buttery but delicious. I loved dipping the shrimp in the sauce after every bite. The bread was very soft and make sure to dip and soak up the sauce! The duck spring rolls were delicious. A good amount of duck is rolled into each roll and the ginger based sauce is nice. The fried oysters weren't as crispy as I thought it would be, but still nice and moist oysters. The truffle fries definitely had that truffle taste to it. There was a good amount of fries but I'm not sure if I would get it again since I want to pair it with some kind of dipping sauce but did not get any. The jumbo crabcake is a MUST TRY appetizer!! Large, beautiful looking crabcake that has lots of crab in it. Glad it wasn't all breading. The pecan pie was pretty good, but I still have yet to find a place that makes it better than my mom. Nevertheless, great pie that was warm and went well with the ice cream.
Atmosphere A fancy feeling restaurant that gives it a nice vibe. Noise level was moderate but I could still hear everyone at my table for 8 people. Definitely a nicer restaurant that I would take people to if I wanted to impress. I could still wear a t shirt and shorts in though, but I also saw people wearing full on suits.
Pricing On the expensive side so it's a place you go to treat yourself. As a tourist, might be a price I'd be willing to pay for the food and experience.
Service Service was just okay in my experience. The staff was very nice and helpful in recommending options. However, they did not do a good job in keeping track of our silverware. When they would clear our plates from appetizer to entree, or entree to dessert we constantly had to ask for new forks/spoons. One of my coworkers started cutting their pork chop with a knife and knife since it took so long for a new fork to come out. In addition, my coworker had ordered medium cooked pork chop, but it came out basically rare. This was not resolved until the end of our meal where he had only eaten 1/4 of the pork chop. Not holding this against the 5 star rating I'm giving them since I tend to rate more on food unless service is very, very bad.
Other Make a reservation since it can get busy! Not too much standing room inside when if you are waiting. Not much parking around and since it is near Bourbon street, driving can be difficult. Great location to walk from if you are in the...
Read moreI'm not sure who owns this place or who is running this outfit but they are failing. The gumbo Yaya is a disappointment and I know everybody doesn't cook gumball like my grandmother used to but this isn't even close to anyone's grandma in the neighborhood that I grew up in. It looked like beef stew and did not have any of the authentic flavors of the Delta. Secondly, the service was lacking there's no way I could walk out of here feeling good about leaving a 10% tip or anything more than that if I leave one at all. Thirdly, I called the managers desk from inside the restaurant and left a complaint that our server was completely lacking. I'm looking at him right now standing with his arms folded like he doesn't even wanna be here. And when I mention the servants heart service model to the manager, the manager stated that he does not believe that we are serving but that we are called to serve which is a complete oxymoron because none of us are slaves and I shared that with him. I am not speaking of the servant heart from a slave mentality and I know this is Louisiana, but in the service industry there is a standard, a genuine personable experience that I'm supposed to leave every client or visitor with. I don't see how this place could even come close to that. Furthermore, I shared with the manager that if he had come to my house and I was just tolerating him, he would know it immediately. Why? Because he would have gone to other homes and visited other people and been treated completely hospitable and wanting to come back. This place is a lot to be desired of and leaves you wondering why you sat down in the first place. Don't let the wood Floors and mahogany doors and leather chairs for you, go somewhere else I guarantee you you'll be treated better. it's ironic, the table sitting next to us were Caucasian people and he was smiling joking asking them how their food was as if he cared. He didn't ask us any of the following questions he didn't ask us if we enjoyed our food or not and we don't know this man personally. I think this is my first experience in Louisiana being treated like this by my own culture. And yeah, I said what I said and I meant it my own culture but the Caucasian people sitting next to me got all of the respect and the service ability that should be the standard for everyone. Furthermore, the dessert menu is boxed not fresh, the $49 red snapper was not cooked to perfection and did not leave me wanting more or deciding if I should get a second plate. And tell me what it is about the bread being in a bag? My first trip to this restaurant will be my last. Don't make my...
Read moreThe food here is great. I will start there. I got the grilled pork chop, and it was excellent. About a 2 inch thick bone-in cut, cooked just right, with an amazing sauce. The duck springrolls were AMAZING. I could eat these every day.
Our server (I won't mention his name, but if you're ever in this place, he's tall and has a pony tail) was a different story. He was nice & all, but quite slow and lacked attentiveness. I get he had 2-3 other tables, but this is a high-dollar place. For the price point, you need to have top notch wait staff. Again, this guy wasn't rude, but slow and (to be honest) a bit clumsy (for a waiter). We were seated nearly 30 minutes before he brought bread to the table. When the entrees arrived, he got multiple deliveries wrong (wrong food to the wrong person is what I mean). The capper was when we had asked (at the beginning of our 2 hour meal) if he could split the bill (4 couples were at our table). He said he could. Then (at the end of our 2 hour meal) he brought one bill with everything on it (including a 20% tip, which we were all OK with as we did have a party of 8). We brought the solo bill up to him, and he went back to the computer to split the bill. When he came back, ANOTHER 20% HAD BEEN ADDED TO THE BILL. We then brought THIS up to him, and he was somewhat apologetic. A manager had to come and correct the issue. The manager then blew it off pretty much, blaming the whole thing on their "old computer", instead of being (what he should have been) overly apologetic to our entire table.
For further context, the table right next to us (another party of 8, whom we were traveling with for the weekend) had a different waiter who had them in & out in 1.5 hours (that's right, they had to wait 30 minutes for us to finish our dining experience). We were all seated together at the exact same time, but the other table was getting their appetizers about when our order was being taken. They were eating their entrees when our appetizers were just showing up to the table. You get the idea.
I don't want to poo poo on this place too much, as it is a very good restaurant. The dining room is big, with an old school New Orleans feel to it. It is loud though, so be prepared to speak up to your table mates. Reservations highly recommended. We'll be back again dine, but hopefully with a different...
